Time trials at conference championships can create one of the most electric, underrated racing atmospheres. Everyone’s tapered and ready to leave everything in the pool to chase NCAA qualifying cuts, and they’re surrounded by their entire team, who have nothing left to do but cheer. That combination has produced some standout swims this week across the ACC, SEC, and Big Ten.
At ACCs, Virginia Tech freshman Diego Aranda swam a 19.16 50 free solo time trial, demolishing the mark he posted in Wednesday’s prelims (19.50). This was his first time under the NCAA standard (19.43). The Uruguayan national record holder in the 50-meter free seems to have hit his stride in short course yards at this meet. His time trial performance is seven-tenths of a second faster than his lifetime best before this week (19.86).
Aranda, combined with his junior teammate Brendan Whitfield, who just blasted a time of 18.71 to tie for 2nd place in the 50 free final, the Virginia Tech men could be within range of their first relay NCAA cut this season.
At Big Tens, Wisconsin’s Lucie Delmas dropped a 1:55.56 200 fly to undercut the NCAA qualifying time, and take half-a-second off her personal best from earlier this month. The freshman from France is seeded 5th in the individual 200 fly on Saturday and could score big for the Badgers.
Other Highlights:
At ACCs, Cal senior Sydney Griscavage had a strong 50 free time trial, hitting the wall at 22.21 to get under the NCAA cut of 22.28. This was faster than her prelims time, and within one-tenth of a second of the lifetime best time she swam in finals to place 17th on Wednesday (22.10). Griscavage was on Cal’s ‘A’ 200 free relay that placed 5th on Wednesday with a time of 1:26.69, well under the NCAA cut (1:28.26). SEC time trials saw South Carolina junior Delaney Franklin crush her lifetime best 200 fly time with a 1:57.60, breaking the 2:00.00 barrier for the first time. She went out in a best 100 fly split of 56.47 and came home in 1:01.13. Her freshman teammate Molly Yacoviello finished in 2nd place (1:58.82), within one second of her best time from the fall.Read the full story on SwimSwam: Time Trials Deliver NCAA Cuts, Big Drops Across ACC, SEC, Big Ten
