ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As tax season approaches, it’s important to be aware of your rights when hiring a tax preparer. Officials from the New York State Department of Finance provided guidance on what to ask before choosing a tax professional.
“Watch out for tax preparers that advertise instant refunds or a refund advance this time of year,” officials said. These advances are often loans with terms that can significantly reduce your refund.
Before getting an advance, ask for a written statement of interest and fees.
Make sure to ask for the preparer’s certificate and a price list for their services.
“Verify whether your preparer will help you and assist you after your return is filed.” Preparers are not legally required to offer post-filing assistance, so it’s important to inquire about this service,” said Sara Carlson, Director of community engagement for the New York State Department of Finance.
Carlson also emphasized the importance of year-round contact availability.
“Your tax preparer is required to provide you with year-round contact information,” she said.
After all, you’re not the only one signing the bottom of that return. You’re preparer is as well, along with his identification number.
