The Green Bay Packers are once again reshuffling their special teams leadership. Rich Bisaccia announced Tuesday night that he is stepping down as special teams coordinator and assistant head coach after four seasons in Green Bay.
Rich Bisaccia Steps Down as Packers Special Teams Coordinator
In a statement released by the team, Bisaccia thanked head coach Matt LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst, and the organization, calling it “truly an honor” to coach the Packers and expressing gratitude for the players and community.
Bisaccia, a longtime NFL special teams coordinator dating back to 2002, joined Green Bay in 2022 and was viewed as a stabilizing hire after years of inconsistency in that phase. However, according to TruMedia, the Packers ranked 30th in expected points added on special teams during his four-year tenure. The unit showed improvement in certain areas, including coverage and punting, but never consistently ranked among the league’s best.
Interestingly, Gutekunst publicly backed Bisaccia just weeks ago, pointing to both schematic growth and cultural impact. He emphasized improvements in coverage units and praised the work of the Packers’ specialists, while highlighting Bisaccia’s influence inside the building.
The timing is notable. Longtime Bisaccia assistant Byron Storer recently departed to become special teams coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. Now, with Bisaccia stepping aside, the Packers will enter LaFleur’s eighth season with their fourth different special teams coordinator.

Northern Illinois head coach Thomas Hammock is heading back to the NFL, taking a job with the Seattle Seahawks with old friend Mike Macdonald, with whom Hammock worked in Baltimore.
Hammock, 44, is leaving NIU after seven seasons to become the running backs coach for the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, according to Pete Thamel. The move reunites him with Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald, as the two previously worked together with the Baltimore Ravens from 2014 to 2018.
Hammock went 35–47 at his alma mater, highlighted by a stunning upset of Notre Dame early in the 2024 season. The Huskies reached three bowl games under his leadership, though the program slipped to 3–9 last year. NIU officially announced his departure on Wednesday, but did not confirm his destination in Seattle.
NIU athletic director Sean T. Frazier also announced that defensive coordinator Rob Harley will serve as interim head coach for the 2026 season. Because of the coaching change, NIU players will receive a 15-day transfer portal window once Harley’s appointment becomes official.
Hammock’s exit comes at a pivotal time for the program, as NIU transitions from the Mid-American Conference to become a football-only member of the Mountain West Conference. For Seattle, it’s another staff addition with familiarity and experience, and for Hammock, a return to the NFL stage.

The Kansas City Chiefs are doing what they’ve done before — leaning on Patrick Mahomes’ contract to create flexibility.
Kansas City restructured Patrick Mahomes’ deal (first reported by Over The Cao’s Jason Fitzgerald), converting $54.45 million into a signing bonus and freeing up $43.56 million in cap space for 2026. Mahomes’ cap hit drops from a massive $78.2 million to a far more manageable $34.65 million.
That said, this isn’t a finished puzzle. Even after the move, the Chiefs reportedly sit about $11.3 million over the 2026 salary cap. More trimming is likely coming. Expected cuts of offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor and defensive end Mike Danna would generate additional relief, and restructuring Chris Jones remains an option if Kansas City needs more breathing room.
All of this unfolds after a jarring 6–11 season that forced the Chiefs into a rare reset offseason. There are major questions ahead, including the future of tight end Travis Kelce, who is not currently under contract and has yet to announce whether he’ll return for a 14th season. Kansas City also figures to be active at running back, with the offense lacking explosive production in that room over the last two years.
