The rumors and allegations and palace intrigue have swirled atop the MLB Players Association for a while now (remember the attempted coup?), but this still comes as a stunner this morning.
On the eve of the most challenging Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiation yet, MLBPA Chief Tony Clark is out:
Tony Clark plans to resign as executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, sources tell @DVNJr and me. Clark’s resignation comes in the wake of the Eastern District of New York’s investigation into alleged financial improprieties at the union.

— Evan Drellich (@EvanDrellich) February 17, 2026Tony Clark has been the head of the union for over a decade, and was set to be the face of the CBA negotiations this year. Now, the MLBPA will presumably be scrambling not only for a replacement, but also to figure out how to manage the negotiations. Deputy Director Bruce Meyer is presumably still in place, and was a key figure in the CBA talks last time around, so maybe he just takes that side over for the next few months?
This is truly wild, particularly the timing. Hopefully the players can figure out how to manage the leadership change swiftly, otherwise they may be well behind the curve in the talks ahead, which either could advantage the owners, or could simply slow negotiations down to the point where a lengthy lockout is assured.
The fallout from this is going to take some time to shake loose, obviously, and I expect we’ll see substantially more reporting in the coming days. That’s especially the case because it doesn’t sound like this was one of those situations where a transition was quietly brewing for a while behind the scenes:
Semien said it was "hard to process" the news and "it's very hard to see because Tony has meant a lot to me.""This came out with no discussion with reps."
