New York University senior Kaley McIntyre had a phenomenal start to the championship season on Friday evening, firing off a new D3 record in the women’s 200 freestyle.
McIntyre, 21, put up a time of 1:44.74 in the final of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships to lower the Division III record of 1:44.82, which Kendra Stern set in 2011.
McIntyre’s former best time was the 1:44.88 she clocked to win the 2025 D3 title, when she came a painstakingly six one-hundredths shy of clearing Stern’s legendary mark.
This 200 free swim represents McIntyre’s 10th NCAA Division III record, adding to three in the 50 free, five in the 100 free, and one in the 800 free relay.
When comparing McIntyre’s new record to her previous personal best, she was much more aggressive on the front half, splitting 50.55 at the 100 (24.14/26.41) compared to 51.15 (24.56/26.59) at last year’s Nationals. Despite taking it out much quicker, the third 50 was nearly identical, 26.88 to 26.92, before she was able to hold on with a 27.31 final 50, half a second slower than the 26.81 she closed with last year.
McIntyre’s swim compared to Stern’s previous record shows eerily similar splits. McIntyre opened about three tenths quicker, 24.14 to 24.42, but Stern was 26.10 on the second 50 to McIntyre’s 26.41, putting McIntyre three one-hundredths off record pace at the 100. Both split nearly identical third 50s, 26.88 for McIntyre and 26.87 for Stern, with McIntyre four one-hundredths off record pace at the 150 before closing in 27.31 to Stern’s 27.43.

No other D3 swimmer besides McIntyre has been sub-49 in the last 15 years, and McIntyre has done it four times.
NYU is in a tight team race with Emory, currently holding a narrow 1278-1254 lead in the team standings. Emory has won the title for the past 26 years, but that streak is in real danger with one finals session to go. McIntyre has gone 10-for-11 in individual wins throughout her tenure at the meet, with her only loss coming in the 50 free as a freshman. Wins in the 100 free tomorrow and the 400 free relay would certainly help NYU’s cause.
In addition to McIntyre holding the #1 time in the 50-100-200 free, the NYU women also currently have the top times in all three free relays and rank 2nd in the 400 medley relay. The Violets are the two-time defending NCAA champions in the 800 free relay and dominated last year’s race, winning by nearly five seconds with a D3 record of 7:13.02. Earlier this week at UAAs, they clocked 7:13.06, missing their own record by just one one-hundredth.
Last year at NCAAs, the Violets placed 2nd in the team race, just 27 points behind team champions MIT. McIntyre looks poised to lead them to even greater heights this season. The 2024 and 2025 CSCAA Swimmer of the Year for Division III, she is pursuing a four-straight 200 free national title in March. She is also the three-time defending champion in the 50 free. The 100 free is the only of her events in which she is not chasing a fourpeat: she swam the 200 back as a freshman and finished 9th at NCAAs.
