Applications for funding from the Graduate Student Association’s new initiative, the Financial Affairs Committee, are now open and will close March 30.
The application is for a fixed amount of $500 and can be found on the GSA’s website. Official graduate student organizations may apply for funding once a semester. Nongraduate student organizations that still benefit graduate students can apply only once per school year.
“By offering structured funding opportunities, the committee aims to empower graduate students to enrich their academic and professional experiences,” said Saketh Reddy, vice president of financial affairs for the GSA.
The GSA worked with the Graduate School dean’s office to secure this funding to further opportunities for graduate students.
“While the SGA has long maintained a process for funding student organizations, graduate student organizations previously did not have comparable pathways to support their activities,” Kerri Morthland, the graduate school’s administrative director, said.
Reddy said that since the initiative’s launch last semester, the association has funded three student organizations: the Language, Linguistics and Literature Graduate Association, the African Students Association and the International Students Association.
”The process went smoothly. I am glad the guidelines, steps and deadlines were clear, and the organizations were able to submit their applications without any issues,” Reddy said.
The GSA plans to eventually expand this initiative to help cover travel costs for individual graduate students attending conferences or other academic functions.
“Many student organizations have powerful ideas and strong leadership, yet their impact is often limited by funding constraints,” said Vamsi Krishna Undavalli, president of GSA. “The GSA FAC was launched to change that to create a reliable and empowering pathway for graduate student organizations to turn ideas into action.”
