ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — For Brighton seniors Lucia Samper and Giovanni Bucci, the current ski season holds special significance. Both athletes have their sights set on qualifying for the New York State Championships at Bristol Mountain, marking a potential senior sendoff.

The journey has been a long one, with Bucci dedicating his weekends to skiing over the last two months to ensure he seizes this opportunity.
Samper, who qualified for states as a freshman, faced a challenging sophomore year with two concussions and a mental health break.
“It was really disappointing. I had gone to states the past year, so I was hoping to do it again,” Samper said.
Now, she feels more prepared than ever, focusing on enjoying the sport she loves.
As Sectionals approach and States begin on Feb. 23, both athletes are in the final stretch. However, their goals have evolved beyond just winning – something they learned from past experiences in the State Championships.
“I had a ton of fun, cuz you get to become friends with a bunch of people in the Section that you don’t always get to talk to because you’re racing,” said Bucci.
“I’m just really looking forward to enjoying the moment. I think back then I was really just like ah I need to perform, I need to perform. But all my goal this year is just to get there,” said Samper.
With their high school careers nearing an end, both Samper and Bucci are excited about the future of their skiing journeys.
“This sport is hard. If anyone’s getting into it I’m so sorry. But it’s so fun,” Samper said. “It takes a lot of time and there’s a huge learning curve, but if you stick with it, it’s a sport you can do for the rest of your life.”
