How to protect yourself against AI deepfakes and scams ...Middle East

Artificial Intelligence is changing the way the world lives and works, but in the wrong hands it can cause real harm.

For all AI does to open up a world of opportunity to accelerate medicine, creativity and productivity, there are ways that wrongdoers can use it to their advantage, and experts are offering assistance.

“Anybody can be impersonated with a single image and a few seconds of audio using tools that require no technical abilities,” said Ben Colman, CEO and Co-Founder of Reality Defender, a company building models to detect deepfake images, audio, videos and text. “In an area where the tools are pennies and free and just a Google search away, you could turn me into any movie star, you can also do things that are incredibly scary, like nonconsensual AI pornography, or even worse AI child sexual abuse material.”

AI ‘deepfakes’ are manipulated or generated content. Often times such faked images can be used in scams, and a person’s voice can be used to fake a phone call from a loved one asking for money.

With such frightening outcomes possible, experts say there are steps residents can take today to protect themselves and their families, such as having a secret passcode to use when contacting loved ones.

Be sure to make it something only you and your loved one would know, according to Colman.

“It [AI] doesn’t know what you know,” Colman said. “So whether you say things like a passphrase, or what I’d do with my family is just ask me ‘what did we have for dinner last night, where did we go for breakfast,’ or just very simply hanging up and calling somebody back.”

Some deepfakes can be difficult for even experts to detect. For the most part AI is still federally unregulated, which is why Colman is in Washington D.C. to push for more regulations.

“Our goal with this year is… trying to accelerate nationwide regulations to help protect consumers for tomorrow,” he said.

At the end of the day, Colman said to do a simple gut-check if something doesn’t seem right.
