BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Wednesday marked World Cancer Day, dedicated to promoting research and raising awareness about cancer. News10NBC spoke with a local cancer survivor to understand what the day means to her.
Nicolette Ferguson, a Brighton resident, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. She emphasized the importance of open discussions about the disease.
“It’s being talked about more. I know a time when you didn’t talk about these things, talk about breast cancer hush-hush. We have to talk about it and we have to get regular checkups,” Ferguson said.
Ferguson said her cancer was caught early and she is currently undergoing hormone therapy. She encouraged others to find support, sharing that she has connected with other cancer survivors through the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester to exchange stories and guidance.
