The Tuscaloosa City Council renewed the Emergency Solutions Grant Program on Tuesday that was first established in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s appropriation act in 1987.
The program intends to help homeless people and domestic abuse survivors with necessities such as moving costs, case management and rental assistance.
The grant program is in part from Gov. Kay Ivey’s allocation of $2.5 million to the ADECA program in 2025, and $220,000 to Tuscaloosa. The funding cap will change annually depending on ADECA’s budget and what changes have been made to the program since the last year it was renewed.
In a press release, Ivey said the programs’ grants “serve as a lifeline for those who are victims of violence or face situations where they lose their homes.”
District 5 Councilor Kip Tyner said that renewing the program is important to the city because it “benefits our citizens.”
According to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, the program aims to upgrade homeless and domestic violence shelters and help meet the essential costs of these shelters so they can continue to provide services to the people who need them. It also aims to rehouse homeless people and help with the costs of directing the Homeless Management Information System.
This program must be renewed annually to continue operations uninterrupted.
