Sunshine & buttercups my fishin’ friends. Are the bass getting ready to spawn? NOPE. Not yet. But, it is getting there. They are thinking about it. As we all know, the pre-spawn period is a favorite time of the year for bass fishermen. Bass are hungry at this time of year, and some of the biggest bass in lakes and reservoirs across the country move shallow in preparation for the spawn. For this reason, the pre-spawn offers the best chance all year of catching a trophy bass.
Lake Mendocino- The bass fishin’ has been improving. a few bass, (males), have been moving up to the mouths of coves and flats. It looks like the pre-spawn is very close to starting. The water temp. is 51 – 56 degrees. When it reaches the mid to upper 50’s spawning will begin. Right now, slow draggin’ plastics has been working the best. Watermelon candy, june bug, and pumpkin seed are all good colors.
Blue Lakes – The Upper Blue Lake still has NOT received a trout plant this month. The best places to fish are; around the Blue Lakes Lodge, Pine Acres, and The Narrows Resort docks.
* Here is my trout fishing tip for all your shore fishermen. If the the water is calm like glass, rig your pole with a slip cast float bobber with a 24 inch leader and salmon eggs on the hook. If the wind picks up, take the bobber off and replace it with a slip weight. Replace the salmon eggs with pink or orange PowerBait. Calm water, fish off the top, ripply water, fish off the bottom. I have been doing this for over 35 years and it always works. Good Luck.
Lake Sonoma- The fishin’ has gotten better as of late. The bass have schooled up at the mouths of coves and are hanging out in rock piles or rocks with timber. Crawdad colored jigs have been working best. Some bass are also being caught on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and slow draggin’ plastics. Most fish are at 15 to 25 feet of water.
Russian River: It is on! The Steelhead are up in the Russian River. Even-though the flow rate is lower, fish are still coming up. Most of the reports are from down south. Fish are being caught at Johnson Beach and Steelhead Beach. The fishin’ up here in Mendocino County was on fire a couple weeks ago. There are still nice steelies in the river, just not as many as earlier. Little Cleo has been the hot bait. I hope that the good start will continue.
