LAKEPORT— Of the cornerstones that make up human civilization, art remains a crucial one. Art itself is captured in ways that range from what is witnessed to what is experienced. A way to showcase art has been through galleries decorated with artists’ works of different kinds. For 45 years, Lakeport’s artists have had a gallery for themselves for others to see.
The Main Street Art Gallery is changing. After 25 years at 325 North Main Street, the Lake County Arts Council (LCAC) decided it was time for the gallery to move. In partnership with the city of Lakeport, the gallery will now operate out of the Silveira Community Center (formerly the Bank of America building) at 500 North Main Street. In addition to moving, the gallery itself is getting a rebrand as Visions Art Gallery. The upcoming First Friday Fling will commemorate the occasion by serving as the gallery’s opening night.
The reason for the change of location is due to the economy. Barbara Clark, the executive director of the Lake County Arts Council said rising rental costs made holding the original space difficult. Due to the Arts Council having been a non-profit since 1981 and facing dwindling funding sources, partnering with the city of Lakeport was the best choice to make. Clark described it as “both groups had needs that the other could meet” and added that she saw potential in the community center.
“It really opens up opportunities to expand our youth offerings and really have Xabatin Park be pulled into it,” Clark said. “It kind of extends our downtown and makes it a little more fun, I think.”
Clark went on to express how the arrangement would revitalize the Silveira Community Center with personnel to help maintain it. Another benefit of the art gallery being in the community center is space for displays for artists or exhibits. Though Clark’s biggest praise has been towards the city of Lakeport’s openness in collaboration and aid throughout the transition. Clark said she has remained excited for the new possibilities and opportunities “to change and do things completely different”.
Sharing in the excitement is Michael Boyle, the new curator of the art gallery. Boyle viewed the move and rebranding as a rebirth into a more vibrant community: a chance to better represent local artists. Although the old building has “a lot of charm” and “a lot of soul,” Boyle felt that the art gallery and the Arts Council had outgrown it. Likewise, he felt a similar way about the name Main Street Art Gallery and described it as a little bit tired. Boyle credited Victor Hall, a graphic designer on their team, for the new logo, and the team in general, for the new name.
“We felt that a fresh start in a fresh building, we really should have a fresh name.” Boyle said. “So, a new name was consistent with everything else that was changing around us. We’re very pleased with the name and the logo. We were all ready for the next stage, the next phase. So, for me, this is the ride of a lifetime.”
The First Friday Fling at Visions Art Gallery’s Opening Night is on Friday, February 6. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and features “Miss Nancy”, a 94-year-old artist from Glenhaven. There will be live music by Malcolm Johnstone and refreshments including wine and appetizers.
