The National Football League is celebrating Super Bowl week in San Francisco this week, but the NFL Draft is right around the corner – which means mock draft season is in full bloom.
Among the early mock drafts already published comes from ESPN’s Matt Miller, who projects that former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson will be selected in the middle of the second round by the New York Jets with pick No. 44.
“Simpson doesn’t have a Round 1 grade on my board, and I couldn’t find a single team that would give him one during conversations at the Senior Bowl,” Miller wrote. “But with four picks in the first two rounds, the Jets can afford to roll the dice on him as a second-rounder with starter upside. Simpson’s lack of size and arm strength could ultimately push him down the board, but his poise and processing skills are NFL-level.”
Simpson led Alabama to an 11-4 record in 2025 during his only year as a Crimson Tide starter. He passed for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns against five interceptions. Simpson completed 64.5% of his pass attempts, but struggled down the stretch in key games against Auburn and Indiana – throwing for just 122 yards against the Tigers in the Iron Bowl and then just for 67 yards against the Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl.
Simpson did not play in Senior Bowl, but was in Mobile for the week, meeting with NFL scouts.
