Gus Malzahn has announced his retirement from coaching after 35 seasons. He announced the decision via Florida State, where he was offensive coordinator in 2025.
Malzahn was most recently a head coach for the UCF Knights in 2024. He left the Knights to become the OC at Florida State and join Mike Norvell’s coaching staff. Norvell had previously coached under Malzahn, who was the assistant head coach and co-OC at the University of Tulsa.
Here’s a statement from the press release put out by Florida State regarding Malzahn’s retirement:
After 35 years, it’s time for me to step away from coaching. I am excited to spend more time with my family and focus on the next chapter of my life. I want to thank Coach Norvell for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious program. I will continue to follow Florida State, and I believe great things are ahead for the program under Coach Norvell’s leadership and for the offense under Tim Harris.
Malzahn leaves behind an odd legacy in college football.
After climbing the ranks of high school and college football, Malzahn eventually became the head coach at Arkansas State in 2021, where he led them to a 9-3 record. The next year, he took over as the Auburn head coach and led them all the way to the BCS National Championship game, where they would lose to Florida State.
What seemed like the next dynasty in college football ended after that one year, as Malzahn would never win the SEC again. He’d finish his Auburn career with a 68-35 record and a 39-27 record in SEC play, axed after the 2020 season.
