About 6:30 a.m. Monday, officials announced Punxsutawney Phil, the famous rural Pennsylvania groundhog that lives in a tree stump in Gobbler’s Knob, saw his shadow.

The meteorological marmot’s predictions on Monday are pretty straightforward. When Phil is said to have seen his shadow upon emergence from a tree stump in rural Pennsylvania, that’s considered a forecast for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see his shadow, an early spring is said to be on the way.
NBC 5 Storm Team Alicia Roman noted the predictions though can seem confusing.
“When he doesn’t see his shadow, that means an early spring. If he sees his shadow, you think the sun is shining, you think the warmth of spring, but it’s the opposite,” Roman said.
What about Woodstock Willie?
The northwest suburb of Woodstock began its annual Groundhog Day celebration of the 1993 movie that was filmed there. The annual event, which includes Groundhog Day movie festivities, performances and guest appearances, also includes a prognostication from Woodstock Willie.
