Trial run of Rafah crossing under Egypt’s coordination ...Egypt

News by : (EGYPT INDEPENDENT) -

The Rafah border crossing has resumed limited operations after months of closure in the Palestinian side under Israel’s control, amidst heightened security arrangements, European oversight, and Egyptian coordination.

The actual movement of travelers through Rafah crossing is scheduled to begin gradually starting today, Monday.

Egyptian and Palestinian sources said that an agreement was reached to allow 200 Palestinians to cross daily during the initial period of opening the crossing, with access being granted to Palestinian patients and wounded individuals with medical referrals, and to those who had entered Egyptian territory during the war on Gaza.

Humanitarian aid trucks resumed their movement, with the 128th convoy departing from Rafah border crossing towards the Kerem Abu Salem crossing, south of Rafah, via the side gate of the Rafah crossing.

This coincided with the entry of the European delegation into the Palestinian side of Rafah border crossing through the Kerem Abu Salem crossing, via Salah al-Din Road.

Ambulances arrived at the main area of Rafah border crossing, ready to receive wounded and sick Palestinians for treatment in Egyptian hospitals.

Escalating tensions

The reopening comes amidst escalating Palestinian warnings about restrictions on travel, particularly for the sick and wounded, coinciding with continued violations of the ceasefire by the Israeli army and other controversial moves by Israel such as terminating the activities of several humanitarian organizations.

Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot and the Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported Israeli security officials as saying that the crossing is being operated according to a preliminary model under European supervision and in full coordination with the Egyptian authorities.

The first phase is limited to the passage of individuals only, it stressed, without allowing the entry of goods or humanitarian aid.

Israeli Channel 13 reported that the Israeli army will establish a security checkpoint in the areas under its control along the Philadelphi Corridor to inspect those arriving at the crossing, as part of arrangements deemed necessary “to prevent any security threats.”

The foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar strongly condemned Israel’s repeated violations of the ceasefire in Gaza, which have resulted in the killing and wounding of more than 1,000 Palestinians.
