‘Nights in White Satin’ Singer, 79, Releases ‘Brilliant’ New Cover and Fans Say He ‘Still Has That Velvet Romantic Voice’ ...Saudi Arabia

When he was just 19 years old, Justin Hayward, last surviving member of the classic Moody Blues lineup, wrote and sang one of the most iconic love songs of the ’60s: “Nights in White Satin.” Now, 60 years later, the 79-year-old just surprised fans with a cover of a Broadway tune that’s all about romance, from the perspective of someone older and wiser: “Hello Young Lovers,” from the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King & I.

“I have loved the songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein II since I was a boy,” Hayward explained, according to Louder. “My mother, who was a fair pianist, bought the songbook of The King and I after she had been to see the movie, and this song always seemed to express something so kind that an older person might say — now, I am that person and can say it from the heart.”

“I started recording the song just for my own personal pleasure, but after a couple of hours I realized it could actually be a record and I got serious,” Hayward continued.

“The orchestral arrangements of Alfred Newman and Ken Darby are magical, and that evening myself and my recording partner Alberto Parodi experimented with surrounding my track (of guitars, bass, keyboards and vocal) with their orchestrations and the effect was beautiful,” the singer added. “Alberto’s friend Roberto, who plays old-fashioned accordion, came round, and in one take it was perfect.”

Fans on YouTube were quick to praise Hayward’s unexpected version of the Broadway standard.

“Justin, you still possess that velvet romantic voice we’ve always loved,” wrote one person, with a second agreeing, “Almost 80 years, and still ‘the voice.'”

“Oh my gosh, this is one of my all-time favorite songs, and to hear you singing it brings joy beyond reason! Thank you so much!” gushed a third commenter, while another raved, “Another beautiful song Justin! I love the show tunes mix of this one! I believe the world will be hearing this wonderful song in many places for a very long time. No other voice will reach the level of perfection that yours does. Absolutely brilliant!”

Hayward’s “Hello Young Lovers” single is backed by a live version of “Haunted,” which he wrote for the 1999 Moody Blues album Strange Times. Recorded at The New York Society for Ethical Culture, this version features tour musicians Mike Dawes, Karmen Gould and Julie Ragins.
