As TSA $45 ConfirmID fee takes effect, here's what the process looks like ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The Transportation Security Administration’s crackdown on travelers who don’t have a Real ID got underway on Sunday.

Travelers who arrive at the airport without an acceptable form of identification, such as a Real ID or passport, will have to pay a new $45 ConfirmID fee.

NBC Chicago met traveler Jeff Rogers at O’Hare International Airport, just as he was trying to go online and pay.

“I mean it is no big deal, but I’m in the process of getting my passport so i don’t have to do that,” he explained.

Rogers said the process seemed to be easy.

While federal officials said about 90% of flyers are prepared with a Real ID or passport, Sunday’s change is still an important reminder.

“The ID process should take no more than 10 or 15 minutes, however it could take 30 minutes or more so we recommend folks take care of this before airport,” said Jim Spriggs, the TSA’s federal security director for Illinois.

Here’s what you do if you don’t have a Real ID or passport.

You make your way through security, scanning a QR code that brings you to pay.gov, where you can pay 45 dollars and get a digital receipt. That receipt then allows you to pass through security and on your way to your destination. You can also pay ahead of time, before coming to the airport. A printed receipt also works.

Spriggs said the TSA urges travelers to pay the fee before the checkpoint to prevent delays.

If getting a Real ID is on your to do list soon – remember the following is what you’ll need for the new identification card: your current ID, Social Security number, proofs of residency and a signature.
