No. 19 Florida dominated No. 23 Alabama men’s basketball in Gainesville on Sunday, 100-74, as the Crimson Tide dropped its fourth SEC contest of the season.

The loss was the team’s 41st all-time road loss to Florida. It was also its fifth straight loss to the Gators, dating back to a 105-87 drubbing in Gainesville on March 5, 2024. The Gators dominated down low, 72-26, and also forced eight missed layups from the Crimson Tide.

Alabama head coach Nate Oats said after the loss that Florida’s energy was great and that the Gators  “came ready to play.”

Alabama let up 47 combined points from Florida star forwards Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon and gave up 1.333 points per possession. The team also committed 18 turnovers, forced just two Gators turnovers and was out-rebounded 44-33.

“It’s hard to win a game when you’re minus-16 on the turnovers and minus-6 on the o-boards,” Oats said.

Florida forced 12 turnovers from Alabama’s backcourt, including five giveaways from star guard Labaron Philon Jr. The performance was Philon’s fifth with more than five turnovers. The team has not fared well when Philon is clumsy with the basketball this season, having lost seven games in which Philon turned it over three or more times.

Oats said that Philon has had five turnovers in a game “way too many times this year.”

A bright spot for the Crimson Tide on Sunday was a 19-point effort from star guard Aden Holloway, who shot an efficient 7/12 from the field. Three other Alabama players featured in double figures, but the team’s lack of defense and rebounding ability allowed Florida to run away with the win late in the first half.

Little separated the two squads until a dominant 13-2 run from the Gators stretched its lead to 11 points with 2:55 remaining in the opening period. Alabama did not force a turnover from the Gators in the first half and was also dominated 32-12 in the paint.

Philon was shut down in the first half by a stout Gators defense, ranked No. 8 in KenPom’s defensive efficiency rating. The potential lottery pick in this summer’s NBA draft finished the opening period with just 6 points on 2/6 shooting and turned it over three times.

The Gators continued to control the game after the break and did not concede a score from the Crimson Tide until the 14:29 mark, when forward London Jemison knocked down a 3-pointer. The dominance continued as the period progressed, with Florida’s lead soaring as high as 27 points with 1:08 left.

Alabama returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, hosting the Texas A&M Aggies at Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on SEC Network.
