Survivor 50 interview with Aubry Bracco
Let's start by saying, and delightfully so, I am so surprised to see you here!I think a lot of people are surprised to see me here.I mean, that's chiefly because you end up doing your first three seasons at such a quick clip. And Edge of Extinction wasn't necessarily the most positive experience to cap off your Survivor career. So what made you ultimately decide to come back? Had the concept of returning for Season 50 been on your mind?First of all, I'm shocked I was called. So incredibly honored I was called. There are so many incredible players. In Survivor, I don't ever think anyone deserves anything. You earn it, and it's a lot of luck. And so I was shocked to even be called. Was it on my mind? I came to peace with the fact that my Survivor journey was over on the Edge of Extinction. I don't care what anyone says, the Edge of Extinction days count. From Days 105 to 111, I remember savoring each moment because I didn't think I'd be here again. And it was really funny. I was doing "Talking with T-Bird" last July, and she's just so warm. And when I heard it was T-Bird, I was like, "I'll talk to T-Bird." There's not many people I'll talk to. And it was a really positive conversation. And she and Rob asked about 50, and I was like, "Huh." And then Q voted out Moriah because she was me or whatever. And I was like, "That's funny."And I really did step back from the Survivor community. I do find it to be so rewarding and incredibly toxic. I'm okay saying it. It's an incredible duality. I played three times in four calendar years. So I paid 32, 34, 38. I didn't have time to step back. And you really do learn a lot and have to unpack a lot. I didn't have the chance to regulate back to normal life, and I felt like I was no longer grounded and no longer myself. So when they called for 50, just the chance to have a reconciliation and to go back with myself, but also the game that I love was such an honor.Well, let's talk about regulating back to normal life. Because a lot has happened in the years since you last played, including becoming a mother. Have those life events affected your headspace going into this season?Yeah. I mean, in the time since I played in 38, I met my wonderful partner, Tyler. I moved out of Los Angeles up to Oregon during the pandemic. My father had a heart transplant, which was incredibly arduous for my family. He's doing well. Shout out to the Mass General Hospital ICU and Cardiac team. I started a business. I have my own marketing business. I'm never going back to full-time. I had an amazing baby named Odin, which means "God of chaos and wisdom." I love the dualities. We call him "Odie." So, just my perspective on life has changed. I mean, it's like, I'm here because I want to have fun and I want to be fearless. And I want to get back to the game that I love on my terms. So your first two seasons, you made incredibly deep runs. And again, Edge of Extinction is quite a different experience. While you make it to yet another finale, you're blindsided in the premerge with an idol in your pocket. Do you feel that having gone through that changes the way you're approaching the game?I know what it feels like to be blindsided. A lot of the players here do not know that, or don't know it in the same way that I do. Some of them have been voted out. Some of them saw it coming. I was fully blindsided, and so I know what that feels like. I also know what it's like when you just are not yourself, and you are not present. I feel the closest to myself that I have since 32, if that makes sense. I feel most like myself, but a more polished version. I learned a lot, and I thought I played a really good game. In 34, a lot of people were like, "What did you do?" I had to hide behind threats that kept getting killed off.Not to mention you were also one of those aforementioned threats.I was one of the Kaôh Rōng four. We had just aired, almost like the three from 48.And not only that, but you also had the recent discourse around Michele's win, and how you might be one of the most "robbed" finalists in the show's history up to that point. It was wild. I have this huge like, "Who is she?" This big mystique. I still feel like people don't know. Zeke once famously — or "famously" in my life story — said to me, "Aubry, people see whatever they want to see when they look at you." These glasses are like a funhouse mirror. What is one thing you're doing similarly, and one thing you're doing differently between your previous seasons and Season 50?So one thing I'm doing similarly is making those one-on-one connections like I did in Kaôh Rōng. I really believe that you can have someone who is your ally, who's your heart, like Joe Del Campo. 71 and getting it done; 80 and still great-y! Cydney was my strategic ally. We saw the game eye to eye. Tai was my energetic connection. We just felt the vibe. So you're gonna see me really work on those relationships. I know the game moves fast, but I think you have to really be in tune with your gut when you feel something with someone, and figure out what that is real fast. Something you're gonna see different is that I'm a little bit more "roll with the punches." If something goes wrong, I think it's the entrepreneurial spirit and me now. I'm like, "Oh, celebrate failure, move on." I feel like I burn a lot less energy when things go awry, and I have more perspective now. The present is moving fast. And if you don't get there, the rug can be ripped out from under you.
That's what people were saying during Kaôh Rōng, that Debbie's the new Coach. Now you get to play with the proto-Debbie!I love him. I love him!How about Chrissy?[Pause.] Foe. She's just savage.Angelina.Frenemy. Friend. Why did you go with "frenemy" at first?Oh, I think she's really crafty. And I'm like, what are you gonna do? But I feel like we could be friends.Christian.Friend. I get a really good vibe from him. I think we're the same age too.Mike.Oh my gosh. I don't know. Mike White is "proceed with caution." Because I'm like, I really like you, but everybody's gonna want to be on The White Lotus. So you're gonna be a magnet. But then I'm also like, "I really like you. Because I can see you observing all of us, and you're writing the next season right now."

But I'm also getting some weird vibes that I don't know where she's gonna fall. There's also the Q of it all. So I know that she had a tempestuous relationship with Q. So I feel like Tiffany is a friend. But proceed with caution, because it depends on what tribe she's on. I really love how Tiffany played the game. I think that she was underrated. Genevieve.Oh my gosh. Another proceed with caution. She does give me Gone Girl vibes. I just feel like Genevieve would commit a murder and then clean up so expertly that you wouldn't even ever say she was a suspect. Genevieve is "proceed with caution." I want to be friends with her, but I'm like, "Be careful." Can you tell I have the same answer for everybody, pretty much?Well, let's see if that answer continues through the 48 crew. We'll start with another Survivor Joe.Friend. I haven't had much time to vibe with him. There's something about Joe where I can tell that he wears his heart on his sleeve. He's a very emotional guy. I'm genuinely curious, even more so than Charlie, about how he's doing in the exact same position. We're a week out from watching a finale where we lost. We may have known we were gonna lose, but now we're grappling with the public's perception of it, how we saw it on TV. It's got to be so raw and fresh for him. I like him.How about Kamilla?Oh my gosh, I love her. But she scares me. I'm like, "Friend, friend, friend, scary in the woods, but I know she'll kill me off at some point." But I like her. The 48s have a nice vibe to them.Is Kyle included in that?Yeah, Kyle's a "Proceed with caution." I mean, he's a master at being engaged but not too much. I like Kyle.Let's talk about the 49ers. Because you played in Game Changers with Zeke and Michaela, two people who were also from a season you hadn't seen. What's your perception of them?Savannah has some Parvati vibes. And Rizo could go anywhere. I'm not sure, but I like them. I would love to work with the 49ers. They are probably a little scared coming in, but I actually think they're in a good position. I think everybody's going to be kind of going for them. I'm open to it. I'm coming into this game, I'm so receptive. There's a softer side to me. I think having a kid and going through what I have with Survivor, I want the players to be okay. But it's also good in that I feel like my spidey sense is back online, and I'm very receptive to the vibes.Which previous player do you wish were out here on the island with you right now?I wish that Kelley Wentworth was on Survivor 50. She's a friend. And I wish Omar. Omar and I have briefly connected more on a human level about sometimes the fallout after this game and how hard it is.
[Laughs.] I love that. "Don't be like me, Aubry!" Well, I'm excited you're back to make another pitch for that million-dollar sale. It was such a happy surprise to see you out there! And it seems like you are in such a clearer mindspace going into this season than you were in the past, which is going to give you a great perspective for hopefully another long run in the game.Thank you for saying that. Because I said I want to be someone's pleasant surprise out here. I've done a lot of work. There might be tears; I've cried on the producers already. But there's a lot of fire there, and things that don't kill you make you stronger.
And you started your Survivor career with tears!I did. Maybe that's what it was all about!
