Joe Brady’s staff is rounding into form as Jim Leonhard has reportedly been hired as the Bills’ next defensive coordinator, filling the final coordinator spot on the team.
Leonhard played a decade in the NFL, beginning his 10-year career with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Leonhard played his penultimate season with the Bills as well in 2013, recording a team-high four interceptions.
On Friday, Pete Carmichael was added as the team’s offensive coordinator, and Jeff Rodgers was signed as the Special Teams Coordinator. Brady, Carmichael, and Leonhard are all disciples of Sean Payton.

After his playing days, Leonhard joined his alma mater’s coaching staff at Wisconsin, where he served as Paul Chryst’s defensive backs coach. One year after Chryst’s staff, Leonhard was promoted to Defensive Coordinator in 2017, where he was named a finalist for the Broyles Award, which honors the top assistant coaches in college football.
In 2022, Leonhard was named the Badgers’ interim head coach after Chryst was fired. Leonhard led Wisconsin to a 4-3 record, but left the program in 2023 after Luke Fickell was hired as the team’s next head coach. Leonhard spent one more year in college with Illinois in 2023 before joining Sean Payton’s staff with the Broncos in 2024. In the 2024 season, Leonhard was the team’s defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator, in 2025, he was promoted to assistant head coach while still serving as pass game coordinator.

Carmichael has spent much of his 30-year coaching career under Sean Payton, serving as the Saints’ offensive coordinator from 2009 to 2023 and returning to Payton in 2024 as a senior offensive assistant. Under Carmichael and Payton, the Saints boasted the league’s best offense in six seasons, at least in yards per game (2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2016). Brady was one of Carmichael’s assistants in New Orleans from 2017 to 2018.

Rodgers has 16 years of experience as a Special Teams Coordinator, most recently with the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent eight seasons. Prior to his days in Arizona, Rodgers spent time with the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, and Carolina Panthers.
