For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Freestyle and IM specialist Chandler Henry, who qualified for the 2026 YMCA Short Course National Championships, has announced his verbal commitment to swim for Division III Asbury University in Kentucky beginning in the fall of 2027.
“I am excited to announce my official verbal commitment to Asbury University! I am so thankful to God for this incredible opportunity. Thanks to my family, friends, and coaches for incredible support and encouragement. Thank you LY and go Eagles!”
The Virginia native has only been swimming with the Lynchburg YMCA since the 2023-2024 season, but he has made huge strides in his time with the team, where he primarily specializes in freestyle and IM across all distances.
Henry has been on a hot streak this season, starting with a series of lifetime best performances at the SRVA Commonwealth Cup in November. He contested the 100 free (52.64), 200 free (1:53.49), 50 breast (30.10), 100 breast (1:05.09), 200 IM (2:06.11) and 400 IM (4:29.23), logging new personal best times in every event except the 100 free.
A month later, Henry lowered some of his top times even further at the 2025 Hoki Swim and Tri Winter Champs. He placed 11th in the 200 IM (2:02.0) and 12th in the 50 breast (29.30), clocking new lifetime bests in both. He also placed 18th in the 500 free in 5:09.49 after turning in a best time of 5:06.38 during prelims.
The 2025 YOTA 32nd Annual YOTA/Arena Capital meet in December saw Henry register six new lifetime best times and pick up his first YMCA Nationals qualification. He placed 24th in the 400 IM in 4:25.04 after throwing down a monster best time of 4:15.87 during prelims to secure a qualifying time for the 2026 YMCA Short Course National Championships. He also contested the 50 free (23.86), 100 free (51.05 – PB), 100 breast (1:03.00 – PB), 200 breast (2:19.83 – PB) and 200 IM (2:02.82), in addition to posting personal best times in the 50 free (23.45) and 50 back (26.92) as the leadoff on the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay, respectively.
Henry also holds a best time of 10:49.14 in the 1000 free, which he set at the LY Winter Invitational in January. Over the past three years, he has improved his best times by a landslide in many of his top events.
Henry’s Top Times Progression
Event 2023-2024 Top Time 2024-2025 Top Time Current Top Time 50 free 26.96 24.21 23.45 100 free 1:02.24 53.80 51.05 200 free 2:16.55 1:58.36 1:53.49 500 free n/a 5:21.63 5:06.38 1000 free n/a 11:03.14 10:49.14 200 IM 2:40.50 2:10.57 2:02.01 400 IM 5:56.46 4:36.75 4:15.87A Division III program, Asbury now competes in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, having made the move into the league this season after being a member of the Liberal Arts Conference in the NAIA since the 2021-2022 season. Last season, Asbury sent one athlete, Ethan Bonow, to compete at the NCAA Division III Championships; he placed 14th in the 100 free (44.67) and 100 fly (48.35) to land the team in 44th-place overall.
Based on the results from the 2025 SCAC Championships, Henry would have landed in the ‘A’ final in the 400 IM and the ‘B’ final in the 200 IM, giving him a chance to score some points right from the start. On the team itself, he would have been Asbury’s fastest competitor in the 200 IM and 400 IM last season and ranked 3rd in the 200 free, 4th in the 50 free and 500 free and 5th in the 100 free, setting him up to be a key contributor for the Eagles.
With another full season before Henry arrives on campus, there is still plenty of time for him to improve his times even further or for the rosters to shake out differently.
Henry is currently the only confirmed commitment for Asbury’s class of 2031.
