The Denver Nuggets got some brutal news on the injury front today. Aaron Gordon will be re-evaluated in four to six weeks after sustaining a right hamstring strain last Friday vs the Milwaukee Bucks.

First of all, this is painful news for Gordon. He spent a long time working his way back from the first injury, missing nearly 20 straight games before making a return to the court in early February. The Nuggets were cautious with Gordon until they couldn’t afford to be, playing him on multiple back-to-backs that increased his workload while other starters remained sidelined.
Gordon being out for at least another month overlaps with the All-Star break, meaning the Nuggets will have a full week in which they don’t play games while Gordon recovers. That being said, he will still miss, at minimum, another 13 games.
More likely, he will miss closer to 20 games once again, returning to the court at some point from early to mid March. That’s between Game 60 and Game 69 of the Nuggets season, meaning Gordon and the Nuggets will have, at maximum, about 20 games to reincorporate him before the playoffs begin.
Spencer Jones has started 30 of the 42 games he’s played so far this season, the vast majority at power forward. He will likely continue to fill in as the starter, unless of course the Nuggets don’t convert him to a full-time contract when his games limit runs out.
Beyond Gordon, the Nuggets are of course missing Nikola Jokic, Cam Johnson, and Christian Braun as well. Jokic is expected to return soon, while Johnson is behind him and Braun is an unknown. If/when those guys return, the loss of Gordon for an extended period will be mitigated in at least a small way.
But the larger issues have always been the playoffs. The Nuggets are hoping to be fully healthy when the final sprint to the finish line arrives. This is just another setback in a long list of injuries that have prevented the Nuggets from seeing who and what they are at full strength.
Gordon’s such a valuable player when he’s out there, able to mold his game to whatever’s needed for the Nuggets to have a chance to win. He can fill in the Jokic role as a playmaker, has grown tremendously as a shotmaker, can step up as a rebounder and defender when needed. Effectively, he’s the Jack-of-all-Trades player the Nuggets always hoped he’d become when they acquired him in 2021.
This is a dangerous point though. The Nuggets have to figure out how much they can realistically put on Gordon in the regular season. This is two straight years in which Gordon has been impacted significantly by soft tissue injuries. For three years before that, Gordon was the picture of health and durability for a Nuggets team that needed him to be great every night. That’s not nothing.
It’s very possible that Gordon’s been unlucky these last two years and the soft tissue injuries are a fluke thing. It’s also possible that he’s becoming more susceptible to these types of injuries in his 12th season in the NBA after playing a physical, highly athletic style as a Top 0.1% athlete in NBA history.
To be their best in a playoff environment, the Nuggets need Gordon at his best. However he gets there going forward is important. The regular season is important, and Gordon has earned the right to fill whatever role he wants for the Nuggets. The contract speaks for itself.
But the Nuggets have championships to win, and in order to get there, they have to win enough regular season games. In order to win enough regular season games, they have to be healthier than they’ve been this year. Winning with four starters constantly missing is simply unsustainable for now and in the future. Denver has some questions to answer.
For now though, it’s all about getting healthy. Here’s to Gordon and the Nuggets finding a way to do just that over the next month.
