Major backups and traffic were expected in northwest Indiana Thursday morning after a semi carrying mail and packages crashed and “completely split open,” the Indiana State Police said, with closures and cleanup expected to last for hours.
The crash, on I-65 northbound, occurred early Thursday morning, TrafficNet reported. As of 7:10 a.m., I-65 northbound was blocked from the off-ramp to westbound I-94, Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield posted.
“If you need to get to eastbound 94 or the toll Rd, the suggested route is to exit Ridge Road to Ripley,” Fifield said, with TrafficNet reporting all cars were being diverted to westbound I-80/94.
According to Fifield, the semi was “loaded with US mail and completely split open when it crashed.”
Fifield added that it would be between three and four hours before the road was reopened.
Traffic cameras from the Indiana Department of Transportation showed heavy backups as the cleanup continued.
