With several Phoenix Suns out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets, Mark Williams said he was confident from the tipoff in his ability to step up.
“My teammates were finding me early and it got me into a rhythm and I think from there I kind of knew it was gonna be a good night,” Williams told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Wednesday.
Williams shined in the Suns’ 106-102 win against the Nets where he scored a season-high 27 points and grabbed six rebounds. The Suns were without several players, including Devin Booker, Jalen Green and Collin Gillespie.

Williams said Tuesday’s win was just the latest contest that showed the Suns’ ability to step up to contribute when players are out and find ways to get a win.
“I think last night was a good example of it and being able to play out of the short role and make plays. It definitely feels good be on the receiving end of it and to win the game,” Williams said. “Hopefully we take that and grow from there and when we get guys back too that will also help. Hopefully it all compliments each other.”
The game was a chippy one as a kerfuffle ensued late in the fourth quarter between several Suns and Nets players, including Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale, Terrance Mann and Dillon Brooks. Williams said the altercation was something the Suns can build off of and that it was good to show how physical they can play when called upon.
“I think there was a lack of control in terms of how the game was called and I think at the end of the game, tensions just ran high,” Williams said. “It’s definitely good to be able to play hard and be physical and stuff like that compared to the other way.”
In 42 games, Williams is averaging 12.3 points (on 66% shooting), 8.2 rebounds and an assist per game.
Despite his success this season, Williams isn’t content with his progress and says he strives to continue to get better.
“I don’t want to put a ceiling on myself. I want to become a better player every single day and every single year I’m in the league,” Williams said. “I think just continuing to get stronger, continuing to expand my game offensively and continuing to lead on the defensive end, all of those sort of things. I wouldn’t say there’s a limit I would want to put on myself. I just want to be the best version of myself I can be.”
