A new judge was reassigned to the Charles Bediako case late Wednesday afternoon, with Daniel Pruet being appointed to the case after the previous judge’s recusal.
Pruet is an Alabama graduate who will now handle the case involving the controversial Alabama center, who was allowed to return to the court last Saturday night and who’s caused a firestorm of attention throughout the sport.
Judge James H. Roberts was originally handling the Bediako case, in which the former turned current Bama big man is battling for more eligibility. But Roberts recused himself from handling the case earlier on Wednesday, according to a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Roberts’s recusal came after it was revealed that he was an Alabama donor, which might have caused a conflict of interest as the case was being dealt with.

— Mike Rodak (@mikerodak) January 28, 2026Bediako was granted a temporary restraining order last week, which allowed the center to play for Nate Oats’s Crimson Tide immediately. He made his debut for Oats on Saturday night in a home loss to Tennessee.
On Monday, Bediako’s 10-day temporary restraining order was extended by another 10 days because of weather issues in the area. Also on Monday afternoon, the NCAA filed a motion for Roberts to recuse himself from the Bediako case.
That all led to Wednesday’s reassignment of Pruet, who will now handle the case that has taken the sport by storm, as Bediako has turned into the subject of scorn by some and support by others.
