Miami’s run of elite transfer quarterbacks will continue for at least one more year.
First, it was Cam Ward, who became the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft after a year with the Hurricanes. Then, it was Carson Beck, who replaced Ward and led Miami to a national championship appearance. Now, former Duke quarterback Darian Mensah is charged with replacing Beck.
According to multiple reports, Mensah committed to Miami head coach Mario Cristobal on Tuesday night. On3 first reported the decision. Earlier on Tuesday, Mensah and Duke jointly announced a settlement to the lawsuit the school brought against Mensah after he signed an agreement to return but tried to enter the transfer portal anyway.
Mensah transferred to Duke last offseason after beginning his career at Tulane. In his lone season with the program, he led the ACC with 3,973 passing yards and 34 touchdowns while helping the Blue Devils capture an ACC Championship.
Mensah ranked 14th nationally in Total QBR (78.0) and ninth in total EPA. Pro Football Focus also graded Mensah as the 12th-best passer in the country (85.0) among qualified quarterbacks. His 28 big-time throws were tied for seventh nationally, though he was also tied for the ninth-most turnover-worthy plays (21).
The Duke gunslinger excelled on balls thrown beyond 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. He completed 68.3% of his passes with 15 touchdowns on passes thrown between 10 and 19 yards. He completed 32 of his 86 attempts (37.2%) on throws of at least 20 air yards, gaining 12.6 yards per pass with 13 touchdowns. (Drops were an issue throughout the season for Duke.)
When pressured, Mensah was shaky (46.9 passer grade), but he was unflappable from a clean pocket.
At Miami, he’ll have Mark Fletcher Jr. and Malachi Toney, two of the sport’s brightest stars at their respective positions, to work with. The Hurricanes figure to rank high inside the preseason AP Top 10 next fall.
