Coco Gauff Calls Out TV Broadcast After Being Caught Smashing Her Racket ...Middle East

News by : (Us magazine) -

Coco Gauff is advocating for player privacy after TV cameras captured her smashing her racket following a loss at the 2026 Australian Open.

“I kind of have a thing with the broadcast,” Gauff, 21, told reporters after her quarterfinal loss to Elina Svitolina on Tuesday, January 27. “I feel like certain moments — the same thing happened to Aryna [Sabalenka] after I played her in the final of [the 2023] U.S. Open I feel like they don’t need to broadcast.”

After Gauff’s loss, cameras followed her into the bowels of Rod Laver Arena, where she turned to head up a ramp, then stopped to smash her racket on the ground multiple times.

“I tried to go somewhere where I thought there wasn’t a camera because I don’t necessarily like breaking rackets,” she added.

Gauff also called for tournament organizers to rethink player privacy amid her outburst.

“Maybe some conversations can be had, because I feel like at this tournament the only private place we have is the locker room,” she said.

Yet Gauff clarified that she doesn’t regret smashing her racket. After all, dozens of players before her have done the exact same and it’s better to take out your aggression on an object than an innocent bystander.

“I don’t think it’s a bad thing,” she said. “Otherwise, I’m just going to be snappy with the people around me, and I don’t want to do that, because like I said, they don’t deserve it. They did their best. I did mine. Just need to let the frustration out.”

Gauff also broke down the match, which lasted just 59 minutes and saw her lose 6-1, 6-2.

“I just felt like all the things I do well, I just wasn’t doing well today,” she said. “The backhand wasn’t firing. Forehand wasn’t really firing. [Serve] returns.”

Gauff added, “There was just a lot that didn’t go well today. I credit it to her because she forced me to play like that. … Today was a bad day, but bad days are often caused by your opponent. So she did well.”

Gauff’s outburst came just three weeks after she faced backlash when a video went viral in which she called American tennis fans “the worst” at traveling to events outside the country.

“Lol I’m going to clarify because people are dragging this out of context. I‘m not expecting people to travel to tournaments to watch us play,” she wrote via X on January 4. “But there are many tournaments that we have in america and abroad where americans are already attending regardless of who is playing (excluding us open) where people come and don’t really cheer for their coutnrymen [sic] player.”

She continued, “Whereas those from smaller countries come with their colors and flags and it is clear on who they are supporting. I was just speaking from my perspective. Trust me I understand the financial aspect of things and know tennis is not accessible for everyone, it was more of a comment for those who are already attending and how I wish they were as passionate as those from other countries more specifically team events.”
