The Buffalo Bills have made their coaching hire, reportedly staying within the organization by tapping former LSU assistant coach Joe Brady to replace Sean McDermott.
ESPN reported Tuesday morning that Brady, who served as Buffalo’s interim offensive coordinator in 2023 and then without the interim tag in 2024-25, will ascend to his first head coaching job on any level once the two sides finalize details of their deal.

Brady, 36, served as passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach during LSU’s march to the CFP national title in 2019. Working under head coach Ed Orgeron, Brady was charged with the play of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Joe Burrow that season. Burrow led the NCAA with 5,671 passing yards, 60 touchdowns and a 76.3% completion rate as the Tigers went 15-0.
Brady moved to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers as offensive coordinator in 2020-21, then to Buffalo as the Bills’ quarterback coach from 2022-23. He played collegiately at William & Mary from 2009-12 and began his coaching career at his alma mater working with linebackers from 2013-14.
Brady’s promotion in Buffalo means continuity for the Bills offense, which saw quarterback Josh Allen throw for 3,668 yards and compile 39 total touchdowns (25 pass, 14 rush) in 2025. The Bills also led the NFL in rushing in 2025 behind the efforts of both Allen (112 carries for 579 yards) and running back James Cook (NFL-best 1,621 rushing yards on 309 carries with 12 touchdowns).
