“Enab Baladi Darayya”, A Return to the Revolution’s Vineyard ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Enab Baladi Foundation announces the launch of a new website dedicated to Darayya (in Rural Damascus, southwest of Damascus), as a specialized local platform focused on the city and its surrounding areas. It places people’s stories and daily needs at the heart of its journalism, as the core and foundation of its mission.

“Enab Baladi Darayya” is a local platform that includes a news website and social media pages, in addition to a printed newspaper. It is an extension of Enab Baladi’s journalistic experience and reflects a firm belief that local journalism is a key pillar for building accurate knowledge, providing a genuine public service, and strengthening mutual trust between the media and the community.

With this platform, Enab Baladi returns to its roots, Darayya, where the newspaper was founded in late 2011. From there, the first issues were secretly produced, and journalist Nabil Sharbaji announced the birth of the first issue on 29 January 2012. It was printed and distributed cautiously in the city’s streets and markets, at a time when telling the truth was a risky act.

In the same place where we lost our colleague Mohammad Koritem who was killed, the platform is operating today, not out of loyalty alone, but from an ethical and professional responsibility toward the city that shaped Enab Baladi’s identity and left a deep mark on its path.

Community media, by the people, for the people

“Enab Baladi Darayya” is a public service space. It is built around amplifying people’s voices, shedding light on their realities, and following up on their daily issues seriously and professionally, away from polarization or political alignments.

The platform focuses on service, social, and cultural issues that directly affect residents’ lives, from the state of infrastructure, public services, education, and healthcare, to the details of daily life, local activities, and community initiatives, reflecting Darayya’s pulse as it is.

At the same time, Enab Baladi is committed to keeping the platform community-centered, focused on people and their day-to-day needs, without delving into the complexities of political, partisan, or religious issues, preserving its role as an inclusive and professional space serving the community.

Complaints monitor, follow-up without noise

In addition to daily news coverage, the platform includes a “People’s Voice” section with a complaints and community notes monitor. It allows residents to submit service-related problems, everyday observations, or information that merits follow-up, through a safe and organized channel that respects the sender’s privacy and adheres to professional verification.

The monitor does not aim to simply log a complaint or publish it as is. Instead, it seeks to turn submissions into a responsible journalistic follow-up track by assessing them, verifying them, contacting relevant entities for clarifications or responses, and then turning them into professional reports, away from defamation or irresponsible escalation.

Through this mission, the complaints monitor aims to be a tool for follow-up, not a platform for noise. It helps people deliver their voices, strengthens transparency and calm accountability, and pushes toward improving conditions as much as possible through objective and fair community journalism.

City memory, part of the story

Alongside this, the platform, through the “City Memory” section, will work to collect and document Darayya’s memory, preserving its human stories, pivotal events, notable figures, and places, as an ethical responsibility toward the city and its people. Memory is part of safeguarding history and heritage, not merely revisiting the past.

The platform will also document the city through photos and video, from streets, neighborhoods, and everyday places that shape the details of people’s lives, by archiving scenes of Darayya as it is, without embellishment or exaggeration. The goal is to build a digital documentary gallery that includes as many images and details of the city as possible, capturing its movement and the return of life to its streets and neighborhoods, after years weighed down by siege and war that changed many of its features.

Darayya guide, directories that serve people

In the “Darayya Guide” section, Enab Baladi aims to build practical, regularly updated directories that help residents easily access the services they need in daily life, by organizing phone numbers, addresses, and contact methods for various entities and institutions.

The guide will include government and service institutions, medical centers, clinics, and pharmacies, along with real estate offices, lawyers, engineers, and other service providers, to serve as a clear and useful local reference that saves time and effort and directly supports residents.

A local team, from Darayya for Darayya

Through this platform, Enab Baladi is moving toward training and employing journalistic and administrative staff from Darayya’s young men and women, people from the same environment and the same target audience. This choice is part of the foundation’s vision that journalism should be produced from within the community, not from outside it.

The platform also seeks to attract specialists and experienced professionals from the city to contribute professional, specialized articles on social, economic, educational, and health affairs, and other issues that matter to Darayya’s residents, ensuring useful knowledge that is close to people’s daily needs.

“Enab Baladi Darayya” does not speak on behalf of the city. It is a space for its people and residents, open to participation, suggestions, corrections, and responsible criticism, in the belief that true community media is built through partnership with people, listening to them, and working with them.
