A state of “cautious calm” is prevailing on the fronts of al-Hasakah Governorate in northeastern Syria, as the first day begins of an extension to the ceasefire between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government. Military reinforcements continue on one side, while humanitarian and service needs worsen in areas under newly established government control on the other.
SDF military reinforcements
Despite the resilience of the extended 15-day ceasefire agreement, the SDF has continued bolstering its defensive lines across al-Hasakah city. Enab Baladi correspondents and local sources reported that the SDF deployed sniper groups atop high-rise buildings, especially schools and water tanks, inside al-Hasakah and Qamishli and around their outskirts. This has raised residents’ fears that residential neighborhoods could turn into potential flashpoints.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced a 15-day extension to the ceasefire between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The ministry added that the agreement starts at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, 24 January, noting that the extension comes in support of the American operation to evacuate Islamic State prisoners from SDF prisons to Iraq.
For its part, the SDF said it had agreed to extend the ceasefire for 15 days through international mediation, alongside continued dialogue with Damascus.
On the ground, the SDF raided al-Bajariya village in the southern Qamishli countryside and fully swept the Dhibanah neighborhood south of the city on the morning of Sunday, 25 January. This coincided with an arrest campaign targeting several young men in al-Hasakah, Qamishli, and al-Darbasiyah. One case of physical assault was also recorded against a minor in al-Hasakah, who was detained and later released.
The outskirts of al-Safa village in the al-Yaarubiyah countryside saw limited clashes, accompanied by a drone attack that targeted Qary village, affiliated with the city of Maabadah, according to media outlets close to the SDF.
Service crises
In areas of al-Hasakah countryside where the Syrian government has recently extended its control, a shortage of bread and consumer goods has begun to loom. In an attempt to respond, government authorities announced:
Operating the al-Shaddadi bakery (south of al-Hasakah) and distributing bread to residents. Resuming operations at Mill 47 to supply affected areas with flour. A visit by al-Hasakah’s director of political affairs, Abbas al-Hussein, to service institutions in al-Shaddadi to assess needs. In education, the al-Hasakah branch of al-Furat University announced the postponement of all theoretical exams in its faculties until further notice, due to unstable security conditions.
Aid and humanitarian corridors
The humanitarian side saw cross-border movement, as 39 trucks belonging to the Barzani Charity Foundation entered through the Semalka border crossing on Sunday evening, heading to Qamishli. The convoy is described as a continuation of 150 trucks that entered over the past four days carrying relief supplies to support displaced and affected families.
Meanwhile, the operations directorate in the Syrian army announced two humanitarian corridors in northeastern Syria on Sunday, 25 January.
According to the directorate, the first corridor includes the Raqqa, al-Hasakah road near Tal Baroud village (in the countryside of al-Hasakah, northeastern Syria), in coordination with the al-Hasakah Governorate.
The second corridor includes the Ayn al-Arab junction on the M4 highway near Nur Ali village (in the northern Aleppo countryside), in coordination with the Aleppo Governorate.
Despite the announcement, the al-Hasakah corridor had not seen any traffic as of the time of writing this report. It is designated for transporting aid and urgent humanitarian cases.
