Where Storm Chandra will hit as UK to be battered by rain, snow and wind ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Storm Chandra is expected to bring heavy rain, wind and snow to large parts of the UK from Monday through to Tuesday evening, leading to warnings of possible travel delays and power cuts for many.

This winter’s latest named storm to hit Britain’s shores is “likely” to result in flooding which in some cases could cause danger to life, the Met Office has warned.

A series of yellow and amber warnings for wind and rain have been issued between Monday afternoon and Tuesday evening, covering much of southern England and Northern Ireland, while parts of northern England and Scotland have been advised to brace for snow.

An amber rain warning is in place for south Devon, much of Dorset, southern Somerset and south-east Cornwall between 5pm on Monday and 9am on Tuesday. It advises that 30-50mm of rain could fall widely with up to 60-80mm possible over higher ground, particularly south Dartmoor.

This is likely to lead to travel disruption, especially on Tuesday morning, with fast flowing or deep floodwater posing a danger to life, while landslides and power cuts have also been deemed a possibility.

Meanwhile, a less severe yellow warning for rain is in place from 1pm on Monday until 10am on Tuesday for a wider area of southern and south-west England as well as southern and central Wales.

The Met Office said as much as 20-30mm rainfall is expected in these areas, with 50-80mm likely across higher ground. Strong south-easterly winds are also likely.

A yellow warning for rain is active for much of Northern Ireland from 12pm on Monday until midnight, before another yellow warning comes into place for the entirety of Northern Ireland throughout Tuesday.

The eastern and northern coasts of Northern Ireland are also under an amber warning for “very strong winds” of 60-70mph, with gusts of 75mph possible, which could cause danger to life through flying debris and large waves.

On Tuesday, the yellow warning for rain is extended across all of southern England including south London and as far north as Oxford through to midday, while the south-west coasts of England and Wales face an additional yellow warning for “very strong south to south-westerly winds” until around 4pm.

Gusts of 50-60mph inland could reach 60-70mph along exposed coastline and peak as high as 80mph for parts of the Isles of Scilly and Pembrokeshire, the Met Office said.

Further north, outbreaks of rain from central England – between Manchester, Sheffield and Stoke-on-Trent – up to the Scottish Borders will fall as snow on higher ground through Tuesday evening, with a similar warning in place for large swathes of southern and north-eastern Scotland.

It is expected that 2-5cm of snow could fall widely above about 300m in these regions, and as much as 10-20cm could accumulate at higher elevations.

Meanwhile, the south-west coast of Scotland is likely to face strong winds in gusts of up to 50-60mph until the end of Tuesday.

An update from the Environment Agency shows 22 flood warnings and 135 flood alerts were in place across England as of 3pm on Monday, mostly across the south-west.

Royal Automobile Club (RAC) mobile servicing and repairs team leader Nick Mullender said: “Flooding is highly likely, making many roads dangerous.

“Our message to drivers is simple: do not drive through standing water unless you are completely certain the water is shallow enough and it’s safe to do so.

“In these conditions, drivers need to slow down and stay alert. Wet roads can double stopping distances, so taking a cautious, steady approach and allowing extra time to react is essential.

“And if your vehicle already has known faults, now is not the time to take risks. Avoid unnecessary journeys and get issues fixed promptly by a trusted mobile mechanic or local garage.”
