Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity will table on the Quad every Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this semester, offering contraceptives to students. The initiative began last Friday.
Alex Huddleston, president of URGE, said the group’s decision to table weekly was made to “build a sense of community.”
“It’s just one of those things of consistency,” Huddleston said, saying the organization wants to give out resources “as much as possible.”
Julia Clark, vice president of URGE, said the organization wants people to “have the autonomy to make decisions” with their bodies within the laws of Alabama.
“We want people to feel empowered to have sex in a healthy and safe way without being at risk or having the financial barrier of getting emergency contraceptives or condoms,” she said.
Alabama law currently prohibits abortion with minimal exceptions. The state constitution also states no part of it “secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20.1 of every 1,000 births come from women aged 15-19.
“We have a lot of Plan B’s. We have a lot of condoms,” Huddleston said. “Might as well make sure that they get distributed to all the students who need them.”
