The Cook County Medical Examiner released the identity of the 6-year-old who was struck and killed in a collision involving a school bus in the south suburbs Tuesday afternoon, with police describing the incident as “tragic” as an investigation remains ongoing.
The incident unfolded just before 3:24 p.m. in the 500 block of Aberdeen Road in Frankfort, with police responding to reports of a traffic collision involving a juvenile and a school bus.
When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive 6-year-old with serious injuries.
Witnesses and first responders immediately started CPR and other live saving measures before the child was transported to a nearby hospital, police said. She was later pronounced dead.
Late Tuesday night, the Cook County Medical Examiner identified the child as 6-year-old Jenna Menias. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner, Menias lived on the same block where she was fatally struck.
An email from the Frankfort School District sent to families shortly after the incident said the collision involved a Frankfort School District 157-C student, and that other students on the bus were evaluated and reunited with their families. No other injuries were reported.
A spokesperson from Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 said the bus involved was a Lincoln-Way bus that was transporting Frankfort 157-C students.
The collision drew a large police presence, with photos and video captured by NBC Chicago showing two yellow school buses near police cars and emergency vehicles on a residential street as a crowd of people looked on.
Frankfort police called the incident “tragic,” and said it had a “profound” impact on the community and those involved.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this heartbreaking event,” police said in a news release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim, their family, loved ones and all those impacted as they navigate this difficult time.”
An investigation remains ongoing, Frankfort police said.
