Red Alert: News10NBC crews tracking the storm from across our region ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

News10NBC continues to track the first major snowstorm in Rochester in the past eight years. First Alert Meteorologists continue to track the latest developments, and we have crews in the field for up-to-the-minute condition reports.

Rochester

Snow continued to fall heavily on Sunday, keeping plows busy on the roads. Despite their efforts, streets quickly turned white again.

Officials recommended avoiding travel unless necessary. However, some places, like hospitals, might require a visit. News10NBC visited the emergency room entrance at Rochester General Hospital and saw plows clearing both the entrance and exit paths, as well as the parking lot.

A plow attached to a construction vehicle was used to clear the hospital’s parking lot. People in the area were doing what they could to help themselves and others.

One man shoveling at a gas station on Portland Ave said he helped a car stuck. The gas station owners mentioned they’d seen people stocking up for the storm over the past few days.

“We sold a lot of rock salt, we’ve got some hoodies, thermals, T-shirts – everything. Hats, scarves, we have a whole bunch of stuff,” said the owners.

Batavia

Rochester hasn’t seen a storm like this in years, but Batavia has already faced multiple storms this winter.

News10NBC Investigative reporter Jennifer Lewke headed west to Batavia and says almost every store, restaurant, and bar closed due to the storm. But, Batavia Downs stayed open.

Most visitors regretfully declined interviews to avoid trouble with their families… But a couple, George and Patty Stephen, shared their experience.

“The weather doesn’t scare me, drove all the way here 30 miles an hour at Main Street all the way from transit so I’ll drive back the same way,” George Stephen said.

“The state of emergency is when he gets me home,” Patty Stephen said.

When asked if she was nervous, Patty replied, “No, he’s a good driver.”

“She watches the road anyway,” George added.

Canandaigua

News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean headed east to Canandaigua, where Main Street was pretty deserted, but the sheriff’s office thinks people took the forecast seriously. He saw a crash on 490 east while heading to the Thruway and flashing lights of a tow truck and a State Police car.

The drive on 90 and 332 into Canandaigua was slow but steady. In the city, only a few drivers were seen getting gas and groceries.

“Just be careful and get to where you gotta go to your destination and don’t play around,” said Joseph Payne.

Berk visisted the 911 center and it was quiet as well. Lt. John Kesel of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office said, “Today we’re seeing a lot of vehicles off the roadway, collisions, vehicles into the ditch. People not being able to maneuver in the snowy roadways and going off the road.”

Kesel added, “It says that people are heeding the advice to not do any unnecessary travel, to actually stay home and only leave if it’s an emergency.”

Sunday night, the sheriff’s office planned to have 12 to 15 deputies available for calls.
