As someone with a family of six—a family that easily goes through several quarts of ice cream a week—I was especially curious about this ice cream line, so I decided to sample my way through the options to find the best Protein Pints flavor. Read on for my detailed tasting notes and my flavor ranking, along with a few things to keep in mind before you crush a pint of your own.

What Is Protein Pints Ice Cream?

Each pint has 30 grams of complete, bioavailable protein in the form of whey protein isolate (the same stuff that's found in a lot of protein powders). The milk and eggs used to make the ice cream add some protein, too. The calorie count varies slightly depending on the specific flavor, but the most calorie-dense flavor, cookie dough, has 480 calories per pint (160 calories per serving), while the least calorie-dense flavors (chocolate, strawberry and coffee) all clock in at 360 calories per pint. For context, a more standard ice cream, like the Chocolate Therapy flavor from Ben & Jerry's, has 17 total grams of protein and 1000 total calories per pint.

Because ice cream is huge with all ages, I had my kids sample these treats, along with a few friends. While we all agreed that these felt more like an "adult" dessert, I included the opinions of kids where they made sense.

It's important to point this out upfront: Protein Pints doesn't claim that its desserts will taste exactly like standard ice cream. While many come close, keep in mind that the texture and flavors are likely to be a little different. After all, these have more protein than your average pint of ice cream and also use sugar alternatives.

5. Protein Pints Cookie Dough

Protein Pints' Cookie Dough flavor is a solid choice. It featured noticeable cookie dough chunks and a creamy texture that was easy to scoop. Those cookie dough chunks were sizable, so you could fish them out and eat them separately if you wanted to. The ice cream itself had a buttery brown sugar flavor that paired nicely with the cookie dough. It still didn't taste exactly like your standard cookie dough ice cream, but to be fair, it isn't your standard cookie dough ice cream. Overall, I found that it satisfied my sweet tooth and filled me up.

Just a note: Like Protein Pints' other single-flavor options (strawberry, coffee and chocolate), you'll want to let this sit out on your counter for 10 minutes or so to soften up before scooping. Otherwise, you'll end up having to chip away at it to get anything out.

One quick heads up: This flavor has 40 milligrams of caffeine per pint (about the amount of caffeine in a cup of green tea). If you're sensitive to caffeine, that's just something to keep in mind.
