Steelers Insider Says “Keep An Eye On” Al Harris as a Fit in Pittsburgh ...Middle East

In case you missed it, the Green Bay Packers hired a new defensive coordinator. And while the good news (for the time being) is that it was *NOT* Al Harris, it turns out that the Chicago Bears defensive backs coach could be on the radar of a former Packers head coach.

Mark Kaboly, who used to cover the Pittsburgh Steelers for The Athletic, shared this tweet that piqued my interest:

I'd keep a keen eye on Al Harris coming in as the Steelers defensive coordinator. Harris is currently the DB coach/defensive pass game coordinator with the Bears.

Could Al Harris land on Mike McCarthy’s staff with the Pittsburgh Steelers?

It would stink for the Bears to lose Al Harris as a position coach. However, it make sense for Harris to join Mike McCarthy with the Steelers — especially if he gets elevated into the defensive coordinator role in Pittsburgh.

ICYMI: The Pittsburgh Steelers Hired Mike McCarthy to be Their New Head Coach

In trying to learn more about Al Harris’ coaching history, I stumbled upon this video interview he did with FOX-32 back in April 2025. Among the things I learned was that Harris coached as an intern alongside Ben Johnson while in Miami. What a tangled web NFL coaching trees can be. If you’re not doing anything else today, I’d encourage you to watch this nearly 6-minute clip:

Al Harris played 194 games during his 14-year playing career, inclduing 102 during a seven-year stint with the Green Bay Packers. His best years came with Green Bay, too, as he earned Pro Bowl trips for his efforts in 2007 and 2008. After hanging ’em up after playing nine games with the St. Louis Rams in 2011, Harris began his coaching career as an intern with the Miami Dolphins (2012) and has since had stops with the Kansas City Chiefs (2013-18), FAU (2019), and the Dallas Cowboys (2020-24) before joining the Bears in 2025.

Given that Al Harris was on Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff with the Cowboys, I can see a scenario in which he follows his former coach (and former boss) to his new gig. Again, that would sting. I believe his coaching tactics rubbed off on a Bears defense that came away with a league-leading 23 interceptions. But, in a way, I would see it as a sign of respect that other teams want to scoop up guys from Ben Johnson’s first staff as the Bears’ head coach. In any case, we’ll continue monitoring this situation with great interest for obvious reasons.
