Saru Salvi is one of six candidates vying for four seats on the Orange County Schools system’s Board of Education this spring, running for public office for the first time on a campaign highlighting the power of public education.
Salvi responded to a series of questions 97.9 The Hill and Chapelboro.com asked each candidate, and provided details into her goals, campaign and vision for the future.
“I never thought I would run for any office,” said Salvi. “I always did a lot of volunteering, since my retirement. However, when I received a call from my County Commissioner, Phyllis Portie-Ascott, stating that she and Representative Renee Price wanted me to run for the Orange County School Board, and with my husband’s encouragement, how could I refuse?”
That call to action pushed Salvi into the race for the board, and her values and priorities in terms of education are focused squarely on students.
“I believe that every student deserves an excellent education that will prepare them for their future,” said Salvi. “This can only be accomplished by listening to the students, parents, teachers and the community. By working together, we can have strong schools that offer a, healthy, safe, and secure, spaces that encourage engagement and learning.”
Salvi worked with companies that supported clinical drug studies and consulted with pharmaceutical brands for more than three decades. She describes the work as one example of public service, alongside her involvement in a local elementary school program and substitute teaching at the middle school level.
Salvi also highlighted her leadership experience, and expressed a desire to collaborate, listen and cooperate to reach the best possible outcomes for all. The challenge of running for office may be new to her, but the act of learning and actively participating in public process isn’t.
“Since I have never run for an office before, I find the process exciting and scary,” said Salvi. “I love the challenge of learning and having new experiences. It is like when I was appointed to the Board of Equalization and Review. I didn’t know anything about property evaluations. It required asking lots of questions and research.”
The Orange County Schools Board of Education race is a non-partisan election, but will be on voters’ ballots alongside the primary races in March. Salvi is joined by fellow challengers Lori Russell and Brian Edwards, as well as incumbents Will Atherton, Anne Purcell, and Sarah Smylie. One seat is open as single-term Board of Education member André Richmond will depart the board after four years in the role. Winners of the election in March will be sworn into the Board of Education over the summer ahead of the new academic year that starts in July.
Voter registration for those participating in the 2026 election cycle is underway and runs through Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. in North Carolina. Early voting for the primary and non-partisan Board of Education election begins on Feb. 12 and runs through Feb. 28, with Primary Election Day set for Tuesday, Mar. 3. More details about key dates and deadlines for voters can be found on the North Carolina Board of Elections website.
