If recent events had led to contrasting moods in the respective Crystal Palace and Chelsea camps, the Blues’ comfortable 1-3 win at Selhurst Park on Sunday will have only intensified those feelings.

For Palace, January has been a dismal month characterised by dreadful form, injuries, speculation about the manager, and even internal friction, whereas Chelsea have enjoyed a promising start to life under Liam Rosenior that’s offered encouragement for the final stages of the season.

Sunday’s meeting saw Palace’s slide continue, their winless run stretching to 11 matches in all competitions, while Chelsea made it three wins in succession thanks to a highly efficient performance.

Palace might have ensured the afternoon was wildly different; Jean-Philippe Mateta was gifted an early chance when Chelsea were robbed of the ball in their own half, but the France international’s finish was scruffy and unable to beat Robert Sánchez.

It’ll have been a moment that resonated with certain sections of the Palace fanbase. After all, speculation around Mateta’s future has been rife in the past week amid apparent interest from Aston Villa, supposedly down to the striker’s frustration about wanting a new contract. The argument from some Eagles supporters is he’s too wasteful to be rewarded, and such a miss won’t have helped his cause.

Chelsea capitalised on that let-off by punishing a Palace error in the 34th minute – Estêvão pounced on a wayward pass back towards the hosts’ half and he brilliantly raced clear of Tyrick Mitchell before finishing emphatically for his first Premier League goal since October, ending an 11-match barren spell.

It was his sixth Chelsea goal, the joint most of any of player while aged 18 or under for the club in the Premier League era (also Callum Hudson-Odoi and Marc Guiu), though that wasn’t where his influence ended.

Shortly after half-time, it was Estêvão’s first-time pass that released compatriot João Pedro behind the Palace defence. The former Brighton forward charged forward before selling Adam Wharton a dummy and drilling through Dean Henderson’s legs.

Aged 18 years, 276 days, that made Estêvão the youngest Chelsea player to score and assist in the same Premier League match since Neil Shipperley (18y 164d) vs Wimbledon in April 1993.

João Pedro went on to play a vital role again around the hour mark. His effort would have found the net were it not for the accidental handball by Jaydee Canvot, and Enzo Fernández extended Chelsea’s lead from the spot.

Any hope of a miraculous Palace comeback was practically extinguished by the dismissal of Wharton, shown a second yellow card for a wild challenge on Moisés Caicedo, curiously making this the first time in Premier League history that the Eagles have conceded a penalty, three goals and had a red card in the same match.

Palace did pull one back, Chris Richards heading in after chaotic scenes at a corner, but Chelsea ultimately strolled to the three points that put them back in the top four for at least a few hours, while Oliver Glasner’s men could yet end the matchday 16th in the table.
