Music Depot has long been Greeley’s neighborhood music shop, taking a few different forms throughout the years. Owner Jenni Sweet and General Manager Tyler Smith recently talked with the Greeley Tribune about what makes the shop unique and taking the store into the future.
How did Music Depot get its start?
TS: Music Depot was started it in 1995 by Dave Dechant. He sold the store to Mark Payne and Jess Redmon, who had the Greeley Guitar Center on 16th Street. But Mark and Jess joined forces and started this iteration of Music Depot. Then in 2019, Jenni bought the store, and our goal has been to kind of modernize everything and bring it into the 2020s.
What does Music Depot do, and what sets your business apart from the rest?
TS: We do retail instrument sales if you want to buy an instrument outright. And we carry most kinds of major instruments that people play — like guitars, drums, pianos and orchestra instruments. We also do music instrument repairs on guitars and band and orchestra instruments. We also do instrument rentals for band and orchestra to make those a little more digestible for the average person, because instruments can get really expensive.
JS: And if a student loves it and wants to stick with it, it is a rent-to-own program, so they can pay it off and it’s theirs. If they don’t, they can just return it and try something different.
TS: We’ve also started doing “guitar pedal arcades” about quarterly. People are very into guitar effects pedals, which are little boxes you put between your guitar and your amp and they change the sound of your guitar. People spend a lot of time building these pedal boards, then they’ll take a picture and post it online. And that’s the most interaction you get most of the time, so I wanted to take people offline and put them all in the same room. It’s kind of like a car meet, but for pedal boards, so people who are enthusiastic about guitar tone can get in the same room and hang out. We also have a friend of the shop who puts together educational seminars about how pedals work, and every arcade we do a different category of pedals.”

TS: The big, ugly one is the pandemic, right? Jenni bought the store in September 2019 and I started Jan. 1, 2020. So it was interesting to go from, “Hey, here’s how all this stuff works,” to “Hey, we have to completely change how everything works.” But it also gave us a chance to remodel into what the store looks like today. On the positive side, it’s been a lot of small things that have added up in the past six years. One that sticks out was when a band called “Heart Collectors” out of Australia stopped in the shop. It was like we were best friends immediately. They performed a song for us. They were booking a tour by word of mouth as they went and ended up spending like three months in Colorado because they just kept getting gigs.
JS: I think a lot of our positives have come from being involved in the community. We got involved with Break the Silence music festival in Fort Morgan, which is a suicide awareness festival. And just getting to know the bands in our community and getting to see them perform and watching them grow.

TS: Our community. It’s our customers. The musicians that come in here and share their experiences. We take a lot of input from our customers. I’m always asking people, “What do you want to see in our shop?” I think our connection with the community is our biggest driver of success. We do a lot of work with schools, so we see kids that were like 13 playing saxophone and coming in that are now 20 and in a band, putting up show flyers. It’s really cool to see that kind of evolution.
TS: Robin, the woman who helps with the pedal arcade. She is a customer. We have a couple homemade guitars for sale that a customer made. It’s all about the people that come in here.

TS: Moving forward, we just want to really solidify our place in the music scene. Because we’ve been here for over 30 years and I still get people that are like, “Hey, I’ve lived her for 15 years and had no idea you were here.” Even though it is technically our 31st year, we want to do a grand reopening to announce to the community that we are here. Other than that, more community events branching off from the pedal arcade, like guitar seminars. We already have an instructor here, Jim Dupre, who has been teaching guitar longer than I’ve been alive. So more community events is the big thing for us this year.
