Well, the day is finally here: Derrick Rose‘s No. 1 jersey will be immortalized in the United Center rafters forever on Saturday night, after the thoroughly mid current Chicago Bulls host the Boston Celtics for a relatively meaningless midseason matchup.
Josh and I have already written some epic tributes to the former Simeon High School point guard that are well worth your time. But the pride of Englewood has been all over the news lately in the lead-up to this special night. His jersey number will be retired forever, joining only Michael Jordan‘s No. 23, Scottie Pippen‘s No. 33, Jerry Sloan’s No. 4, and Bob Love’s No. 10.

— Chicago Bulls (@chicagobulls) January 24, 2026 Former two-time All-Star Bulls center Joakim Noah, one of Rose’s closest friends off the hardwood, has been getting into the media mix too. He recently hopped on ESPN’s “Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective” podcast to talk all things Rose — and to plug his very entertaining new travel show, “Nomad.”“Our relationship is unique mostly because when he got hurt, we got to spend a lot of time together. I think this was a very lonely time for him, a lot of questions. We really bonded during that time when he got hurt. He had a very, very different story,” Noah said. “You come from Chicago, you’re the No. 1 pick, one of the most exciting players to watch, and all of a sudden all of that is taken away from you with an injury. Basketball is how we were raised, it’s really all we knew at that point of our lives. Now you have to wait and sit back a year. I don’t think people realize how hard that moment was for him.”
It can be hard to appreciate just how tremendous a superstar Derrick Rose was during his ascent with the Bulls. The 2011 MVP’s Adidas sneakers were bestsellers, he was an incredibly in-demand pitchman, and he adorned the cover of every hoops rag worth its salt. Now, he’s doing the latter again, as Slam is celebrating his jersey retirement with a special commemorative issue.Born in Chicago. Immortalized in Chicago. Derrick Rose changed the game, inspired a generation, and never stopped repping the city that made him. — Chicago Sports Network PR (@CHSN_Media) January 23, 2026 Rose has been all over the place lately to promote his jersey retirement. That certainly includes the United Center, where he has been a veritable fixture of late. His favorite NBA playoff memory was his 36-point outburst during his 2009 postseason debut, an overtime victory against the then-reigning champion Boston Celtics. Rose’s favorite play ever, in his career, was his buzzer-beating backboard triple over Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson to put Chicago up 2-1 in the two teams’ 2015 second-round series. That marked Rose’s third healthy playoff encounter against eventual teammate LeBron James — and eventually, his third playoff defeat. But for one shining moment, the Bulls held the upper hand. Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports Kevin Durant, who’s the same age as Rose, appears likely to be named to his 16th All-Star team as a coaches’ reserve soon. He’s had his own health setbacks too over the years, but unlike Rose has managed to fully bounce back and remain among the game’s elites for decades. The 6-foot-11 sniper was cementing his own legend in the Western Conference around the same time Rose was rising in the East. He reflected on just how long he’s known that Rose was going to become a legend.
Kevin Durant reflected on his earliest memories of DRose w/ @EMcintosh762681 ahead of #1 going to the rafters in the UC:

“I remember one coach saying, ‘This dude is going to be the best player in the league.’ He was 13 when they were saying that. That was the projection. So to see him come out, live up to expectations as a player, get his jersey honored and retired, and be loved across the basketball community,” Durant said. “I’ve got nothing but love for D-Rose.”
