According to the YouTube channel Professor of Rock, the brother and sister duo were both unsure about the tune, penned by songwriter Neil Sedaka. However, Richard Carpenter admired the song and wanted his sister to record it.
In an interview with Huffington Post, Richard shared Karen's feelings about the song. He explained, "Karen never cared for 'Solitaire,' and I'm not that crazy about it either!"
He continued, "What I liked about it, more than anything, is that it shows off her voice so darned well. But, no, she never cared for that song."
"Solitaire" was released on January 18, 1975. It became the Carpenters' 12th top-selling hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and 15th consecutive Top 20 hit on the Hot 100.
