First Alert Weather: Biting cold into the weekend, then Red Alert for widespread snow ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert continues into early Saturday morning for dangerously cold air. Temperatures will drop below zero away from the Lake Ontario shoreline. Meanwhile, temperatures will remain cold, but above zero near the lake due to the warmer water, and the clouds from lake effect. The good news is, despite the frigid air, the wind will ease into the day. So, we’ll still have wind chills well below zero to start the day, but it’ll turn less harsh into the morning and afternoon.

Lake effect snow will persist into Saturday, but tend to focus right along and near the lakeshore. A couple inches of fresh lake fluff is likely there, though it’ll be difficult to measure, due to the gusty winds Friday night into very early Saturday. So expect areas of blowing snow, as well. Saturday will be our “calm before the storm” – literally. We’ll see some sunshine out of any lake snow, and travel won’t be an issue in most areas.

A Red Alert is now in effect for Sunday into Monday, as confidence continues to grow for a sizeable and moderate to high impact snowfall. Light snow will move in Sunday morning. If you have plans during the morning hours, they should be ok. Conditions will begin to go downhill, especially after lunchtime as the snow begins to pick up in intensity. The snow will fall steadily and moderate to heavy at times Sunday afternoon into the evening, and overnight. The area-wide snow will begin to pull away Monday morning, but there will likely be impacts on roads, businesses and schools Monday morning. Then conditions begin to improve through the day.

Breaking down the snow: right now, we expect 4-6″ of snow on Sunday, another 4-8″ on Sunday night, and a few more inches on Monday. Most of our area will likely see a foot of snow, with as much as a foot and a half near Lake Ontario, where there will be an additional boost of moisture, plus lake effect on Monday. Snowfall will be manageable broken down from Sunday morning through Monday night, but travel will be difficult at times, and when all is said and done, the Rochester area will likely see our biggest winter storm in a few years.
