ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Anaya Sanasie, a sixth grader at Allendale Columbia School, is being honored for using her own money to put together care packages for people facing homelessness.
Anaya filled the packages with snacks, water, socks, and other essentials. She kept them in her parents’ car so they could hand them out whenever they saw someone in need. For her birthday, she asked to hand them out to people in need.
She has gotten others involved, sharing packages with family and friends so they can help. Her sister says Anaya has always looked for ways to give back. Even as a young child, she carried bags on neighborhood walks to pick up litter.
“So it was my birthday, and my Aunt Michelle asked me what I wanted for my birthday. So instead of asking for a gift, I asked to make bags for the people in need. So I gave those out, had a little note in them, and everything,” Anaya said.
Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here. See past winners here.
