Gov. Josh Stein and other state officials urged residents to get ready to stay at home and off the roads as a winter storm moves through the state this weekend, making travel unsafe and likely causing power outages.
“This is a serious storm,” Stein said. “We’re taking it seriously, and so should you.”
A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected to fall over the weekend, starting at midday Saturday. It’s likely that there will be enough ice accumulation to break tree limbs and bring down power lines, said NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray.
Power outages could last for days, Stein said, and icy roads will make for dangerous driving into next week.
“Plan for the possibility that you’ll be stuck at home for a few days,” he said.
Stein declared a state of emergency on Wednesday.
The state Department of Transportation has spread 2.8 million gallons of brine on roads and is ready to plow and salt them when the storm starts, Stein said.
Utilities have assembled 18,000 workers from around the country to help restore power, he said.
Residents should prepare by making sure they have enough medication, water and non-perishable food for three to five days for each person and pet in their household. He advised residents to have a plan for keeping warm in case their power goes out, and to think about who they’ll call if they need help.
