Markham Aquatic Club swimmer and Markham, Ontario native Amy Chai has committed to Cornell University for the fall of 2026.

In July, Chai raced at the Ontario Championships (LCM), where her best finish came in both the 200 IM (2:21.53) and 400 IM (4:58.31), setting a lifetime best in the latter. Chai also clocked a personal best in the 200 butterfly, touching 4th in 2:21.48. At that meet, CHai also placed 7th in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.03), and 9th in the 100 breast (1:15.74).
One of her best short-course showings came in December at the Ontario Junior International meet. There, she set her fastest-ever times in the 200 IM (2:16.51), 400 IM (4:48.04), 200 fly (2:18.39), 400 freestyle (4:24.95), and 800 free (9:04.81).
Chai also boasts a best 200 IM long course time of 2:21.24 from the MAC Spring invitational in May. She also boasts a 200 free best time of 2:08.72 in the long course from the RHAC Spring Invitational in May.

Though Chai has not yet competed in yards, her converted times would have projected her to finish 8th in the 400 IM, 23rd in the 200 free, and 28th in the 200 IM.
Chai is an immediate scoring threat with still about eight months until she makes her debut for Cornell.
She has set all of her most notable best times within the last calendar year, with many of them set in the last two months. The upcoming spring and summer months could further improve those times for Chai.
Chai’s converted times not only stack up well with last season’s Ivy League Championships, but she would sit 3rd on Cornell’s roster this season in the 400 IM, and 7th in the 200 IM. Cornell junior Hojung Yoon ranks at the top of the 200 IM and 2nd in the 400 IM performers list this season for Cornell. She will have one season of eligibility remaining when Chai joins the program.
Chai joins Abby Lee, Mae Winardi, Anna Nishnianidze, Sarah Carrico, and Kate Lucyshyn in Cornell’s 2026 recruiting class.
