East Rochester School District prepares for frigid temperatures Friday ...Middle East

EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With severe cold expected Friday, East Rochester School District, the only walking school district in Monroe County, is taking precautions to ensure student safety.

A district spokesperson said they are monitoring wind chills closely. If temperatures reach -25 degrees or below, the Monroe County Department of Public Health recommends canceling in-person classes.

The district emphasized that student safety is their priority. They are prepared to provide winter gear to students who need it.

Parents have the option to keep their children home if they feel it’s unsafe due to the weather, the district’s website states. A written excuse explaining the absence is required.

“I always bundle them up. Get them extra, extra gloves on the sides. I know they lose them throughout the day,” said Amber Albrecht, a mother of two students in the district. “I live close enough that, you know, it’s not as much as concerned with the walking. They don’t have to walk. I have time to bring them. I do feel for the kids that you know that live on the other side of the tracks is a long walk.”

Albrecht said the district has made the right decisions in these situations in the past, but she believes schools should cancel at -5 degrees.

The district will continue to monitor information from the National Weather Service and Monroe County departments to decide if schools can remain open.

In a statement, the district said the following:

“Despite a large number of students who are normally driven to school in personal vehicles, the East Rochester Union Free School District is still considered a walking district. As such, we closely monitor information from the National Weather Service and Monroe County Departments of Health and Emergency Management to determine if our school district operations can continue during inclement weather in our Western New York climate.

The safety of ER’s school community remains first and foremost in our decision making process, as we prepare each day to feed students two meals and provide a quality educational experience on campus. In order to support students who are not driven to school, we have a substantial inventory of winter weather gear to provide for extra layers.

We acknowledge and prepare for the fact that variable winter weather can pose challenges for arrival and dismissal times. As we begin to see projected forecasts for frigid temperatures, we look to our aforementioned resources to establish whether sustained wind chills will exceed -25 degrees, as that has been a past recommendation from the health department to consider closing school.”
