The Brewers Model Continues, Cubs Do Their Part, Mets Improvements, Kelly, Molina, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I have become far too obsessed with checking the updated projections for this massive storm. These are not the projections I want to obsess over. I want to obsess over ZiPS!

The Brewers finally did it, sending Freddy Peralta to the Mets, together with swing man Tobias Myers, for prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat. As much as I want to believe the Brewers will be stung in 2026 by losing their best starting pitcher, we’ve seen this play before. And, after magically weathering the Peralta loss just fine, the Brewers will be all the better for having Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat going forward. They’ll figure out a way to turn one year of Freddy Peralta into 12 years of something close to Freddy Peralta. It’s a model. It’s annoying. It works. It was already going to be the case that, on paper, the Cubs would project to win more games in 2026 than the Brewers – that is often the case – and that difference will only get larger after this trade (Peralta was projected for 3 to 4 WAR, so the Brewers’ win total projections will probably drop one or two wins). Like I said, though, we’ve been burned so many times in recent years thinking that the Brewers would FINALLY take a step back after one of these trades, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect they will be fine once again. The Cubs have done their part this offseason to put together another 90+ win team of their own. That’s really the only part they can focus on, and then you just hope the Cubs have better results directly against the Brewers this time around. One measure by which we could evaluate the trade is how much the return does or does not stack up with the Corbin Burnes trade (pitcher with an even better track record, but twice the salary). Keith Law sees it as a similar return, with maybe a little more upside this time around, as Williams has a chance to be a good defender at multiple spots and an above-average bat/base-runner, and Sproat has number two potential if everything clicks.

The Brewers are basically the Rugrats but everyone produces 3 WAR

— Jaymes (@jaymesl.bsky.social) 2026-01-22T02:53:51.895Z As for the Mets, they are now all the more loaded after a week that saw them add not only an impact starter in Peralta (and a nice swing-man in Myers), but also a big bat in Bo Bichette, and a big bounce-back opportunity in Luis Robert Jr. Given all the additions and subtractions this offseason for the Mets, I’m not sure I’d say they’re definitely better on paper than last year (when they started out hot and then fell off a cliff), but they’re certainly looking very good as we sit here today. The NL East once again figures to be very competitive among the Mets, Phillies, and Braves, with the two that don’t win the division heavily involved in the Wild Card race. The Brewers rotation now rests primarily on Brandon Woodruff being healthy, Jacob Misiorowski putting it all together, Quinn Priester being legit, Chad Patrick repeating, and Logan Henderson being ready. All very much possible, and if it all happens, that could be a very good rotation. They have pretty good depth, too, actually, now that I think about it. Ugh. I hate this trade even more now. Carson Kelly’s 2025 season was a revelation for the Cubs, and although we probably shouldn’t count on him duplicating it in 2026 as a 31/32-year-old catcher (the history of big offensive seasons from catchers at that age and older is a pretty thin list), it’s nice to dream:

— Jacob Zanolla (@jacobzanolla) January 22, 2026 Also, Kelly really only needs to be an average bat – together with Miguel Amaya doing the same or a little better – and, with his defense/game-calling/etc., and boom, the catching position is overall fantastic for the Cubs again. No deferred money in the Ranger Suarez deal for the Red Sox, but HOLY BACKLOADING:

Ranger Suárez's Red Sox contract is heavily backloaded, per sources.Signing bonus: $3M2026: $7M2027: $15M2028: $30M2029: $30M2030: $35M+ 2031 mutual option ($35 million) with $10M buyout.

— Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) January 21, 2026 You have to have a club that is willing/able to maneuver with these enormous sums of money, but yeah, the state tax element is a huge win for the players:

2026…Ohtani $2M salary, $68M deferredTucker $1M salary, $64M signing bonus Bichette $2M salary, $40M signing bonusThese players and agents are getting really good at legal state tax evasion.

— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) January 21, 2026 It was only a matter of time before Yadier Molina returned to the Cardinals’ organization in a dedicated role, and if there’s one thing we know about beloved catchers becoming “special assistants” in the front office, it means the guy is being groomed to be the next manager. Frankly, I’m looking forward to getting to root directly against Yadi Molina soon. Rivalries are fun.
