While it’s unfair to put 2-year national title expectations on any new coach, there will be plenty of talk in the college football offseason about IU’s incredible turnaround under Cignetti. On Wednesday, Brandon Marcello of CBS Sports identified Jon Sumrall‘s Florida program as one that could see an Indiana-like turnaround.
“Jon Sumrall, I think more so, not necessarily just the type of players he brings in, but just his ability to galvanize, put a team together and get them all to believe in each other. And then they improve. Every single John Sumrall team you watch, they’re just absolutely improving week to week to week to week,” Marcello told McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning.
“And he does it year after year. It’s very difficult to do, especially this day and age. And I’ve got big, big faith in him in the future, especially long-term at Florida, but even in the short term. I think that’s gonna be a team at Florida next year that you’re gonna say Week 11, they’re so much better than they were in Week 4, Week 5.”

“This guy, he might be a little bit like (Indiana coach) Curt Cignetti,” Spurrier said on Another Dooley Noted Podcast, per On3. “I mean he is serious and guys are going to play hard, they’re going to play with effort. We’re not going to have 13 on the field, all the kind of stuff. Give coach Sumrall credit for what he’s building right now as we start out, of course trying to sign some transfer guys and all that and go from there.”
Sumrall arrives at Florida with a 43-12 coaching record from 4 seasons at Troy and Tulane. While Florida fans are hoping Sumrall can make the Gators championship contenders in 2026, a return to the postseason would be a big step in the right direction. UF did not earn bowl eligibility for 2025, the second time in the past 3 seasons.
