First Alert Weather: Light lake snow to continue with more arctic temperatures to come ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A warm front passes through our region early Wednesday evening. This will bring our temperatures briefly into the upper-20s to low 30s later this evening before dropping into the mid to low 20s overnight. This small drop will be accompanied by a cold front that may bring a quick inch of snow to Rochester. Areas further southwest (southwestern Monroe County and Wyoming County) may pick up 1 to 2 inches from a bit of lake enhancement.

Lake flakes will stick around behind this cold front as we head into Thursday. However, we start to lose out on deep moisture which will make it tricky for heavy snow to reach Rochester off Lake Erie. Accumulations for Rochester by Thursday evening are expected to be less than 1 inch while, again, folks closer to the northwestern stretch of Lake Erie may pick up 1 to 3 inches through Thursday. This general southwesterly flow will keep tolerable temperatures in our region for the day. Rochester can expect a high of 28 degrees for Thursday, but gusty winds will drop windchills into the single digits by the evening. Winds will be out of the west-southwest between 15 and 30 mph with gusts at times over 40 mph.

As winds shift more westerly into Thursday overnight, lake snow will target east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. However, for Rochester, less than an inch of snow is expected Thursday night. Extreme southern Monroe County, Livingston County, and Wyoming County are expected to pick up a couple inches if this lake band holds through. Winds drop down a little overnight to 10 to 15 mph out of the west with gusts close to 30 mph at times. Expect overnight lows in the mid-teens with windchills near 0 degrees.

Cold arctic air fully arrives Friday after a cold front passes through early Friday morning. For now, we are looking at a high of 15 degrees on Friday with windchills in the negative single digits during the day. Friday’s overnight low is forecasted at -1 degree with windchills between -15 and -20 degrees. Saturday looks even colder with a forecasted high of only 8 degrees with windchills in the negatives throughout the day.

Sunday, a very potent low pressure system will track to our southeast. This system will bring very active and treacherous weather to much of the southeast up through the Appalachians through Saturday and Sunday. We are tracking the potential for heavy snow from this system later Sunday through Monday. The track of this low pressure system is trending closer to western New York which may put Rochester in line with heavier snow. A Yellow Alert may likely be issued for heavy accumulating snow Sunday night through Monday.
